🕊️ PRAY HERE Devotion 🕊️ Mania Outbreak! Where Did It Come From?
Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Devotion :
Back in the day, what many of us called “crazy” was occasionally seeing somebody walking down the street talking to themselves.
Today, we’re seeing emotional and mental struggles show up in so many different ways:
Racing thoughts.
Anxiety and panic attacks.
Insomnia.
Loss of appetite.
Feeling hopeless and overwhelmed.
Irrational thoughts and behavior.
Isolation.
Wanting to give up on life.
And sometimes behavior that becomes dangerous to the person suffering or to somebody else.
This is SERIOUS.
The World Health Organization’s latest global report estimates that about 14% of the world’s population, more than one billion people, were living with a mental disorder in 2021. Anxiety and depressive disorders were the most common.
That’s a LOT of hurting people. 😔
Now you may be thinking:
“I’m good. This has nothing to do with me. I’m not having any mental or emotional problems.”
Praise God that you aren’t!
HALLELUJAH!! 🙌🏽
But let me tell you why you should still care.
WE LIVE AMONG PEOPLE WHO ARE HURTING.
The person working beside you.
The person shopping beside you.
The person sitting beside you on public transportation.
The teenager who hasn’t told anybody what they’re thinking.
The mother who looks fine but is barely holding herself together.
The man who keeps saying, “I’m good,” but hasn’t slept properly in days.
You don’t always know what somebody is fighting in their mind.
And sadly, some people reach a point where they harm themselves. WHO estimates that 727,000 people died by suicide worldwide in 2021. https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240110069
For the last couple of months, I have found myself praying specifically concerning mental illness because it has become so prevalent and visible.
WE ALL NEED TO PRAY! 🙏🏽🙏🏻🙏🏼🙏🏾
But I also want us to understand something important.
Mental illness is real. People can experience mental-health conditions for many reasons, and getting professional help, counseling, medical evaluation, or appropriate treatment does not mean somebody lacks faith. WHO also reports major gaps in access to mental-health care around the world. https://www.who.int/news/item/02-09-2025-who-releases-new-reports-and-estimates-highlighting-urgent-gaps-in-mental-health
And as believers, we also understand that there is a spiritual battle concerning our minds.
The enemy wants hopelessness.
He wants fear.
He wants despair.
He wants you convinced that nothing will ever change and that there is no reason to keep going.
Because if he can keep your mind trapped in darkness, he’ll try to rob you of your joy, peace, hope, love, and desire to live.
😔
This is why we have to pay attention when somebody starts spiraling.
Maybe every situation immediately becomes:
“Something terrible is going to happen.”
Maybe one disappointment turns into:
“Nothing EVER works out for me. My life is never going to get better.”
Or maybe a young person, or an older person, becomes so overwhelmed that they begin thinking:
“Everybody would be better off without me.”
THOSE THOUGHTS NEED ATTENTION.
Don’t laugh them off.
Don’t tell somebody to “just get over it.”
Don’t assume they’ll snap out of it.
PRAY. LISTEN. LOVE THEM. AND HELP THEM GET HELP.
🙏🏽
People are hurting.
People are under pressure.
People are overwhelmed.
And some people feel completely lost.
Back in Bible days, they didn’t have all of the modern medical terminology we use today, but Scripture absolutely describes people experiencing deep anguish, fear, despair, troubled thoughts, grief, and emotional distress.
We’re going to look at some of those biblical examples in the next devotion.
But today, let’s look at what Paul told Timothy:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a SOUND MIND.”
WHEWWW! 🙌🏽🔥
A SOUND MIND.
God is not the author of fear and hopelessness.
God gives us POWER.
God gives us LOVE.
And God desires stability and soundness in our minds.
But I want to be careful here: having a mental illness does not mean God abandoned you, that you aren’t saved, or that you simply didn’t pray hard enough.
Please hear me.
Someone can love Jesus and still need a therapist.
Someone can pray and still need a doctor.
Someone can know Scripture and still need help getting through a mental-health crisis.
GETTING HELP AND PRAYING ARE NOT ENEMIES.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
We can pray AND encourage treatment.
We can believe God AND sit with somebody while they call for help.
We can quote Scripture AND listen compassionately.
Because if somebody is drowning, this isn’t the time to debate why they fell into the water.
HELP PULL THEM OUT!
My, my, my. 🙏🏽
And if you’re reading this today and your mind has been overwhelmed, please know:
YOU DON’T HAVE TO SUFFER SILENTLY.
Tell somebody.
Reach out.
Pray.
Get professional help.
And if you’re thinking about ending your life or hurting yourself, please get immediate help and don’t stay alone with those thoughts.
There is still hope.
There is still help.
And there are still people who want you here.
💙
We’re going deeper into this subject in the next devotion.
But today, I’m asking the entire PRAY HERE family:
PRAY FOR PEOPLE’S MINDS.
Pray for our children.
Pray for teenagers.
Pray for parents.
Pray for people carrying trauma.
Pray for people battling anxiety and depression.
Pray for people whose thoughts have become so dark they can’t imagine tomorrow.
And while we’re praying…
PAY ATTENTION TO PEOPLE.
Somebody around you may need more than:
“How are you?”
They may need you to stop long enough to actually hear the answer.
God bless you. 🙏🏽💙
Reflect & Respond
Is there somebody God has placed on your heart lately?
Check on them.
And don’t automatically accept “I’m fine” if something tells you they aren’t.
Sometimes love looks like prayer.
Sometimes love looks like listening.
And sometimes love looks like helping somebody get professional help.
Prayer :
Father God, today I pray for minds all over this world.
Lord, people are hurting.
Some are overwhelmed.
Some are afraid.
Some haven’t slept.
Some feel hopeless.
Some are suffering silently while everybody around them thinks they’re okay.
Father, please meet them in that dark place.
Bring peace where there is fear.
Bring hope where there is despair.
Bring clarity where thoughts feel overwhelming.
Protect those who are thinking about harming themselves or somebody else.
Lord, put the right people around them.
Lead them to appropriate doctors, counselors, therapists, pastors, family members, friends, resources, and treatment.
Give families wisdom to recognize when somebody needs help.
Remove the shame surrounding mental illness so people will speak up instead of suffering alone.
And Father, guard our minds.
You have given us power, love, and a sound mind.
Help us pray for one another, love one another, listen to one another, and take care of one another.
Lord, let somebody who feels like giving up discover today that THERE IS STILL HOPE.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🏽
