🕊️ PRAY HERE Devotion 🕊️ Don’t Let Your Mind Take You On A Trip; & Don’t Let Your Moods Swing
Scripture: Philippians 4:8 KJV
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Devotion
Have you ever heard the saying:
“Life is full of swift transitions”?
IT’S TRUE! 😮💨
Things can change quickly.
One phone call.
One unexpected bill.
One disagreement.
One disappointment.
One diagnosis.
One family problem.
One bad day at work.
And suddenly your mind is going 100 MILES AN HOUR.
That’s why we have to learn how to manage our minds through life’s transitions.
Anybody can become overwhelmed.
Anybody can experience anxiety.
Anybody can have sleepless nights.
Anybody can reach a breaking point.
Either you know somebody who has been there…
or YOU’VE BEEN THERE YOURSELF.
That’s why it’s important to know what to do and to have healthy routines that work for you before you reach your limit.
In moments of high stress or anxiety, I tend to lean heavily on the Word of God and prayer.
Two of my go-to Scriptures are:
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” — Isaiah 26:3
And today’s Scripture:
“…whatsoever things are true… honest… just… pure… lovely… of good report… think on these things.” — Philippians 4:8
Do you see what both Scriptures address?
YOUR MIND.
Whewww! 😮💨🙌🏽
Sometimes our own thoughts will take us on an unnecessary, and sometimes destructive, trip!
Your body can be sitting safely in your bedroom while your mind has traveled ten years backward, rehearsed every person who ever hurt you, imagined five things that haven’t happened, predicted something terrible for tomorrow, and created an argument with somebody who isn’t even in the room!
😂😮💨
DON’T LET YOUR MIND TAKE YOU ON A TRIP!
It matters what you sit and think about.
If I sit all day thinking about everything that’s going wrong…
If I constantly replay painful things I’ve experienced…
If I rehearse what somebody said to me over and over…
If I imagine the worst possible outcome…
Eventually those thoughts begin affecting how I feel.
Anger.
Fear.
Retaliation.
Hopelessness.
Isolation.
Bitterness.
Sadness.
Irritability.
Jealousy.
Suspicion.
Panic.
Despair.
And before long…
YOUR MOOD STARTS SWINGING WITH YOUR THOUGHTS.
👀
You were fine.
Then you started thinking.
Now you’re mad.
Nobody in the room even did anything to you! 😂
But your mind replayed something from yesterday, last month, or ten years ago, and your body started responding to what your mind was entertaining.
That’s why Paul doesn’t simply say:
“Don’t think negative thoughts.”
He gives us somewhere else to put our minds:
WHAT IS TRUE?
WHAT IS PURE?
WHAT IS LOVELY?
WHAT IS OF GOOD REPORT?
THINK ON THESE THINGS.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
That’s mental redirection.
It doesn’t mean pretending problems don’t exist.
It doesn’t mean ignoring grief, trauma, responsibilities, or things that genuinely need attention.
It means:
I WILL NOT ALLOW ONE PROBLEM TO TAKE CONTROL OF MY ENTIRE MIND.
WHEWWW! 🙌🏽🔥
We all can only handle so much before reaching a breaking point.
You’ve probably heard somebody say they had a “nervous breakdown.”
That’s not a specific medical diagnosis, but people commonly use the phrase to describe becoming so overwhelmed by stress or emotional distress that they temporarily struggle to function normally.
Our minds and bodies can become overwhelmed.
That’s why WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM.
And sometimes the problem is that we’re carrying too much ALONE.
Trying to handle the children.
Marriage.
Work.
Money.
Ministry.
Family.
Grief.
Everybody else’s problems.
Your own problems.
And still smiling while telling everybody:
“I’m good!”
No, you’re not! 😂😮💨
GET SOME HELP!
God never said you had to carry everything alone.
Even Elijah reached a breaking point.
In 1 Kings 19, after tremendous pressure and fear, Elijah ran away, sat under a juniper tree, and asked God to let him die.
ELIJAH WAS TIRED.
God didn’t stand over him saying:
“What’s wrong with your faith?”
Elijah slept.
He ate.
God ministered to him.
And eventually God reminded Elijah that he wasn’t as alone as he thought.
My, my, my. 🙌🏽
Sometimes spiritual people need REST.
Sometimes we need FOOD.
Sometimes we need PRAYER.
Sometimes we need SUPPORT.
And sometimes we need a THERAPIST.
THERAPY IS HEALTHY.
You don’t have to wait until you’re falling apart to talk to somebody.
No matter how “together” you think you are, there can be value in having a qualified professional help you process stress, grief, trauma, relationships, thought patterns, and emotions.
PRAYER AND THERAPY DON’T HAVE TO COMPETE.
You can pray AND talk.
Read your Bible AND get counseling.
Trust God AND accept help.
🙌🏽
And Elijah isn’t the only person in Scripture we see experiencing deep emotional distress.
David cried, grieved, feared, and described nights filled with tears.
Job experienced devastating grief and spoke from profound anguish and despair.
Jeremiah wept deeply and expressed tremendous sorrow.
Elijah became exhausted, isolated himself, and wanted to die.
Even Jesus, before the cross, said His soul was “exceeding sorrowful, even unto death.”
The Bible does not pretend human beings don’t experience emotional pain.
BUT IT ALSO DOESN’T LEAVE US WITHOUT HELP.
🙏🏽
So when your mind starts traveling somewhere it doesn’t need to go…
BRING IT BACK.
When your thoughts start predicting disaster…
WHAT IS TRUE?
When you’re replaying something that keeps making you angry…
WHAT IS LOVELY?
When your mind tells you everything is hopeless…
WHAT HAS GOD SAID?
When you’re overwhelmed…
ASK FOR HELP.
When you’re exhausted…
REST.
When you need professional support…
GET IT.
And when life starts transitioning…
KEEP YOUR MIND STAYED ON GOD.
Because Isaiah says:
“Thou wilt keep him in PERFECT PEACE, whose mind is stayed on thee.”
WHEWWWW! 🙌🏽🔥
We cannot control every transition.
We cannot control everything people do.
We cannot prevent every difficult day.
But with God’s help, we can learn to recognize what we’re allowing to live in our minds.
So today…
DON’T LET YOUR MIND TAKE YOU ON A TRIP.
And…
DON’T LET YOUR MOOD SWING WITH EVERY THOUGHT.
Redirect it.
Pray.
Talk.
Rest.
Get help when you need it.
And keep bringing your mind back to WHAT IS TRUE.
God bless you. 🙏🏽💙
Reflect & Respond
Where has your mind been taking you lately?
The past?
Fear?
Worst-case scenarios?
Anger?
Regret?
Ask yourself:
“IS WHAT I’M CONSTANTLY THINKING ABOUT HELPING MY MIND OR HURTING IT?”
Today, practice Philippians 4:8.
When your thoughts begin spiraling, intentionally redirect your mind toward what is true, honest, pure, lovely, and of good report.
Prayer :
Father God, I give You my mind.
Protect my mental and emotional health.
Help me recognize when my thoughts are taking me somewhere unhealthy.
When I become overwhelmed, remind me that I do not have to carry everything alone.
Teach me to rest.
Teach me to ask for help.
Teach me to accept support.
Give me wisdom to know when I need counseling or professional care.
When my thoughts begin predicting the worst, bring me back to what is true.
When my mind replays hurt, help me process it without allowing it to control me.
When anxiety rises, help me keep my mind stayed on You.
Lord, guard me from hopelessness, bitterness, fear, retaliation, isolation, and despair.
Let Your Word manage my thoughts instead of my thoughts managing me.
Father, give me peace in transition, stability under pressure, wisdom when overwhelmed, and strength when I feel weak.
Today I declare:
MY MIND BELONGS TO GOD.
Help me protect it, manage it, and fill it with Your Word.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🏽💙
