Scripture: Mark 6:12–13 KJV

“And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”

Devotion :

Have you ever seen someone in church take a small bottle of oil, put a little on their finger, and anoint somebody while praying for them?

Maybe you’ve even been anointed with oil yourself.

But did you understand WHY?

Some of us have been around church traditions our entire lives without ever stopping to ask what they mean.

We saw our grandparents do it.

We saw our parents do it.

We saw pastors and prayer warriors do it.

Somebody would pull out that little bottle of oil, and immediately we knew:

Somebody is about to PRAY! 😂🙌🏽

But I don’t want us doing things simply because “that’s what we’ve always done.”

I want us to be enlightened by the Word of God and understand the biblical significance behind being anointed with oil.

And today’s Scripture gives us a powerful example.

Let’s read it together.

Jesus had called His twelve disciples and sent them out two by two.

These weren’t men going out on their own authority trying to make a name for themselves.

JESUS SENT THEM.

Whewww! 🙌🏽

And Mark 6:7 tells us that Jesus gave them power over unclean spirits.

That’s important because before we ever talk about the oil, we need to establish where the power came from.

JESUS!

🔥🔥🔥

The oil wasn’t the source of their power.

The disciples weren’t the source of the power.

GOD WAS!

We should never take something God uses and begin putting our faith in the thing instead of the God who has the power.

The oil is not magic.

Buying a bottle of olive oil does not automatically make somebody healed.

Putting oil on your forehead isn’t a secret formula that forces God to move.

OUR FAITH IS IN GOD; NOT THE OIL.

But does that mean the oil is meaningless?

Absolutely not!

Because look at what the Bible tells us happened when Jesus sent these disciples out.

Verse 12 says:

“And they went out, and preached that men should repent.”

Hold on right there!

Before healing…

Before deliverance…

Before anointing people with oil…

REPENTANCE WAS BEING PREACHED.

My, my, my! 😮‍💨

We cannot become so excited about miracles that we forget about salvation.

Jesus wasn’t merely interested in making people’s bodies feel better while leaving their souls in bondage to sin.

The disciples preached:

REPENT!

Turn away from sin.

Turn toward God.

Change direction.

Then verse 13 tells us:

“And they cast out many devils…”

There is deliverance.

“…and anointed with oil many that were sick…”

There is the oil.

“…and healed them.”

There is healing!

WHEWWWWWW! 🙌🏽🔥🔥🔥

Do you see what was happening?

These disciples were going from place to place carrying out the ministry Jesus had authorized them to do.

People were being called to repentance.

Demons were being cast out.

Sick people were being anointed with oil.

People were being healed.

JESUS WAS CHANGING LIVES THROUGH HIS SERVANTS!

And this practice of anointing the sick with oil doesn’t disappear after this passage.

James 5:14 says:

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

There it is again!

Prayer.

Oil.

And most importantly:

“IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.”

🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Now let me make something crystal clear.

If somebody is healed after being anointed with oil…

GOD HEALED THEM!

If somebody is delivered…

JESUS DELIVERED THEM!

If somebody is protected…

GOD PROTECTED THEM!

If chains are broken…

THE POWER BELONGS TO GOD!

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The oil can be used as an act of faith and obedience, but GOD gets ALL the glory.

And I can personally testify to this.

I GREW UP BEING ANOINTED WITH OIL. 🙌🏽

When I was sick, I remember being anointed with oil and prayed over.

And sometimes I wasn’t sick at all.

I was anointed with oil while someone prayed God’s protection over me.

So this isn’t something that was introduced to me yesterday.

I have experienced it throughout my life.

And then I became a mother.

I carried that same practice into my own home.

There have been times when I have anointed my own children with oil and prayed for them.

I’ve prayed for God to protect them.

I’ve prayed for God to keep them.

I’ve prayed concerning situations they were facing.

I’ve asked God to intervene.

And sisters and brothers…

I HAVE SEEN GOD GRANT ME WHAT I PRAYED FOR!

🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🔥🔥🔥

WHEWWWW!

I have watched God answer prayers that I prayed over my children.

And I want you to understand something about my testimony.

THE OIL DIDN’T ANSWER MY PRAYER.

GOD DID!

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I wasn’t putting my faith in olive oil.

I WAS PUTTING MY FAITH IN GOD!

The oil accompanied the prayer, but my prayer was directed to the One who has the power to heal, deliver, protect, keep, and answer prayer!

And some of you reading this probably have a similar testimony.

Maybe you remember your mama pulling out the oil.

Maybe it was your grandmother.

Maybe it was your pastor.

Maybe somebody in your family would anoint you before you left the house and pray:

“Lord, cover them. Keep them. Protect them.”

And now that you’re older, you can look back over your life and say:

“GOD KEPT ME!”

Whewwww! 🙌🏽😭

There are probably some things He protected us from that we don’t even know about.

There are prayers somebody prayed over us that we didn’t understand at the time.

But look at us now.

WE’RE STILL HERE!

THANK YOU, JESUSSSS! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

This is why I want us to be enlightened about what we’re doing.

I don’t want us carrying bottles of oil simply because somebody said:

“Bring some oil.”

I don’t want us being anointed simply because that’s something we’ve seen done in church.

UNDERSTAND THE BIBLICAL SIGNIFICANCE.

The oil is not our God.

The oil is not our healer.

The oil is not our deliverer.

THE OIL POINTS US TO GOD!

And notice again what James 5:14 says:

“…anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

Our authority isn’t in the bottle.

IT IS IN THE NAME OF JESUS!

🔥🔥🔥

So as we prepare for the PRAY HERE Prayer Revival, we are going to pray over and bless the oil.

We are going to anoint people with oil.

We are going to pray for healing.

We are going to pray for deliverance.

We are going to pray for protection.

We are going to pray for people who have been carrying things they desperately need God to break.

But hear me clearly:

WE ARE NOT COMING TO WORSHIP OIL.

WE ARE COMING TO WORSHIP JESUS!

🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🔥🔥🔥

We’re not putting our confidence in a bottle.

Our confidence is in GOD.

We’re not trusting the hands of the person praying.

We’re trusting JESUS.

We’re not looking for somebody to perform.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR GOD TO MOVE!

WHEWWWWWW! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

Somebody may be wondering:

“Can God really heal today?”

YES!

“Can God really deliver somebody from bondage?”

YES!

“Can God still protect?”

YES!

“Can God still break things people have been fighting for years?”

YES!

God has not lost His power.

Jesus has not become weaker.

And the Holy Ghost has not retired! 😂🙌🏽🔥

But I also want us to understand something important from today’s Scripture.

DON’T ONLY COME LOOKING FOR GOD TO CHANGE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES. COME PREPARED FOR HIM TO CHANGE YOU.

Remember verse 12:

“And they went out, and preached that men should repent.”

Maybe part of the deliverance you need begins with repentance.

Maybe there is something God has already told you to release.

Maybe there is a habit that needs to go.

Maybe there is unforgiveness you’ve been carrying.

Maybe there is secret sin you’re asking God to deliver you from while you continue willingly returning to it.

Maybe you want healing in one area while refusing to surrender another.

BRING ALL OF IT TO JESUS.

Don’t only ask:

“Lord, what can You do FOR me?”

Ask:

“LORD, WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE IN ME?”

Whewww! 😮‍💨

That’s where surrender begins.

And when someone anoints you with oil and begins praying for you, don’t become distracted by the oil.

LOOK TO JESUS.

Pray.

Believe.

Repent where repentance is needed.

Surrender.

Ask Him for healing.

Ask Him for deliverance.

Ask Him for protection.

Ask Him to break bondage.

Ask Him to strengthen you.

And mothers and fathers, PRAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN!

Lay your hands on those children and pray.

Pray for their minds.

Pray for their health.

Pray for their decisions.

Pray for their protection.

Pray for their future.

Pray for their relationship with God.

COVER YOUR HOUSE IN PRAYER! 🙌🏽

I’ve done it.

And I’ve seen God answer.

So I’m not telling you something I’ve only read.

I’m telling you what I have personally experienced.

But when God answers…

When God heals…

When God delivers…

When God protects…

When God makes a way…

GIVE GOD THE GLORY!

The oil is not our Savior.

The minister is not our Savior.

The prayer team is not our Savior.

JESUS IS!

🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🔥🔥🔥

Reflect & Respond

Before you seek anointing with oil, ask yourself:

What am I asking God to do in me?

Do I need healing?

Do I need deliverance?

Do I need protection?

Is there something I need to repent of?

Is there bondage I genuinely want to be free from?

Am I willing to surrender whatever God tells me to surrender?

Don’t merely desire the experience of being anointed.

DESIRE THE GOD WHOM THE ANOINTING POINTS YOU TOWARD.

And when you’re anointed with oil and prayed for, don’t put your faith in the oil.

Put your faith in JESUS CHRIST.

There is still healing in Jesus.

There is still deliverance in Jesus.

There is still protection in Jesus.

There is still freedom in Jesus.

AND ALL THE GLORY BELONGS TO GOD! 🙌🏽🔥

Prayer :

Father God, thank You for teaching me through Your Word and helping me understand the biblical significance of being anointed with oil.

I recognize today that all power, healing, deliverance, protection, and freedom come from You.

I will not put my faith in oil, people, traditions, or rituals.

MY FAITH IS IN YOU.

Search my heart today.

If there is anything I need to repent of, reveal it to me and give me the strength to turn away from it.

Where I need healing, Lord, I ask You to heal.

Where I need deliverance, set me free.

Where I need protection, cover me.

Break every bondage that is keeping me from walking fully in Your purpose.

Deliver me from sin, destructive habits, unhealthy attachments, fear, unforgiveness, and anything else that has taken hold of my life.

Lord, I also place my family before You.

Cover my children.

Protect them from dangers seen and unseen.

Keep their minds.

Keep their bodies.

Keep their hearts.

Order their steps.

Draw them closer to You.

And when I am anointed with oil and prayed for, help me keep my eyes and my faith on Jesus.

When You move, I will remember where my help came from.

YOU get the glory.

YOU get the honor.

YOU get the praise.

Thank You for being my Healer.

Thank You for being my Deliverer.

Thank You for being my Protector.

Thank You for being my Keeper.

And most importantly, thank You for being my Savior.

In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen! 🙏🏽🔥💙
