Scripture: Isaiah 29:13 (KJV)
“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:”
Devotion:
Busyness does not prove love and commitment.
A person can “do” a lot of things for you…
And still be unfaithful.
😮💨 Whewwww!
Yep… think about that for a minute.
Imagine a husband who never forgets his wife’s birthday.
He sends her flowers.
He pays all the bills.
He takes her on dates.
He posts beautiful anniversary pictures.
To everyone watching, he looks like the perfect husband.
But when he’s away from home…
He’s entertaining other women.
Lying.
Living a double life.
He’s married in his wife’s sight…
But outside of her presence, he’s acting as if he has no covenant at all.
Now let me ask you…
Would all the flowers, gifts, and dates make up for the unfaithfulness?
Absolutely not.
Why?
Because love is not measured by activity. It’s measured by faithfulness.
Whewwww!!
Now here’s the hard truth…
People do this to God every single week.
They don’t miss church.
They’re at every revival.
Every conference.
Every auxiliary meeting.
They pay their tithes and offerings.
They usher.
They greet.
They sing in the choir.
They preach.
They teach.
They quote scriptures.
They’re busy…
Very busy.
But when they leave the church…
🙃
They’re dishonest at work.
They’re sleeping with someone who isn’t their spouse.
They’re gossiping.
Holding grudges.
Refusing to forgive.
Watching things they know don’t honor God.
Using filthy language around certain groups of people.
Living however they please Monday through Saturday.
Then showing back up Sunday morning as if nothing happened.
Whewwww!!
Here’s the one truth they forget.
God is sovereign.
God is omnipresent.
That means while He sees your service in church…
He also sees your lifestyle outside of church.
He sees you ushering…
But He also hears how you talk to your spouse.
He sees you singing…
But He also knows what you watch when nobody else is around.
He sees you preaching…
But He also knows whether you’re living what you’re preaching.
Nothing escapes His sight.
Growing up, I often heard the elders say,
“You can fool people some of the time, but you can’t fool God none of the time.”
Whewwww!
That’s still true today.
The enemy has deceived many people into believing that if they stay busy in church…
God will overlook the unfaithfulness.
But this has never been about checking religious boxes.
This has always been about the heart.
Let’s look at today’s scripture.
God says,
“This people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me…”
In other words…
They know all the right church language.
They know when to shout.
They know when to clap.
They know when to say,
“Praise the Lord!”
“Amen!”
“Hallelujah!”
But then He says something heartbreaking.
”…but have removed their heart far from me.”
Whewwww!!
Did you catch that?
They were physically close…
But spiritually distant.
Busy…
But disconnected.
Religious…
But not surrendered.
Then God says,
”…their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.”
In other words…
They were following traditions…
Not pursuing a relationship.
They knew church culture…
But they didn’t truly know God.
My, my, my!
Growing up, I also heard another saying that used to make everybody laugh.
“If you’re going to go to hell, don’t go in a Pinto… go in a Cadillac.”
😂 Whewww!
The elders weren’t encouraging sin.
They were making a point.
Don’t spend your entire life busy in church…
Only to discover you never truly gave God your heart.
That’ll preach!
Think about the prayer of salvation.
What are we asking?
“Lord, come into my heart.”
Not just my church attendance.
Not just my title.
Not just my gifts.
My heart.
Because that’s what He’s always wanted.
Today, God isn’t asking you to do more.
He’s asking you to surrender more.
He doesn’t need another performance.
He wants your heart.
God bless you!
Reflection
Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:
If church services stopped for a month, would my relationship with God still be growing?
Or has my relationship become dependent on routine instead of intimacy?
God isn’t impressed by empty service.
He delights in faithful hearts.
Today, don’t just give Him your schedule.
Give Him your heart.
Prayer:
Father God, I come before You with an honest heart. Forgive me for every time I have been more concerned with looking committed than actually being committed. Forgive me for every area of my life where I have honored You with my lips while withholding my heart. Lord, I don’t want to render empty service to You. I don’t want to simply go through religious routines while living a double life. Search my heart and reveal anything that is displeasing to You. Remove hypocrisy, pride, and every hidden sin. Today, I repent and surrender my whole heart to You. Teach me to love You not just in public, but in private. Let my worship be genuine, my obedience be sincere, and my relationship with You be real. I promise to pursue You with my whole heart, not just with my words. Thank You for Your grace, Your mercy, and for never giving up on me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🏼🕊️
