Scripture: Romans 1:21â22 (NKJV)
âBecause, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.â
Devotion: Did you know that just knowing God is not enough?
Knowing Him should reflect in your everyday life. It should shape how you think, how you respond, how you choose, and how you live. But what is really happening today?
People say a quick word to Him every now and then. They thank Him publicly when something big happens. They post about Him when they win, when they recover, or when they get the blessing they prayed for.
But in between those moments, they live detached from Him.
Not truly grateful.
Not seeking His counsel.
Not submitting their will.
Doing only what they want.
Iâll give you an example. Many of us raised our children in church. We taught them about Jesus. We prayed with them. Now some of them are young adults who donât go to church, donât pursue God, and donât acknowledge Him consistently. When God is mentioned, they say, âI pray all the time,â or âI know God.â But when you look at their life choices: their lack of faith, their constant turmoil, their disregard for Godâs ways ; you see the absence of relationship.
This is most people today.
Another example is how some celebrities live openly sinful lifestyles, promote ungodly values, and influence millions to follow destructive paths ; yet when they win an award, they say, âFirst, I want to thank God.â Thereâs a spiritual moment on stage, but no surrender behind the scenes. Thatâs not glorifying God. Thatâs acknowledging Him when itâs convenient.
Letâs break down this scripture.
It says although they âknew God,â they did not glorify Him as God, nor were they thankful. That means they had awareness ; but no reverence. Knowledge ; but no honor. Familiarity ; but no submission.
Then it says their thoughts became futile.
Futile means pointless. Empty. Unproductive.
When we reject Godâs authority in our daily lives, our thinking becomes distorted. For example, someone may believe they are making wise decisions by cutting corners, manipulating situations, or living only for pleasure ; thinking it will lead to success or happiness.
But the results are broken relationships, constant stress, inner emptiness, and regret. Thatâs futile thinking. It feels smart in the moment but produces no lasting fruit.
The scripture continues: âProfessing to be wise, they became fools.â
This is sobering.
We can convince ourselves weâre intelligent, progressive, enlightened ; yet live in complete opposition to Godâs design. We think we know better than the One who created us. And then we experience chaos, confusion, and consequences, wondering why life feels unstable.
Life without God isnât just difficult ; itâs foolish.
When we reject Him daily, when we ignore His counsel, when we live without acknowledging Him in our choices, our hearts darken. Our judgment weakens. Our thinking drifts further from truth.
And yet we say, âBut I know Him.â
I encourage you to understand that your thoughts and actions reveal just how well you know God ; or how distant youâve become. Itâs not about perfection. Itâs about posture. Itâs about daily acknowledgment. Itâs about gratitude and surrender.
The good news is this: itâs never too late to get closer. Itâs never too late to invite His influence back into your decisions, your mindset, and your life.
Life with God produces wisdom.
Life without Him produces foolishness.
Choose wisely.
Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I have acknowledged You with my lips but not honored You with my life. Help me to truly glorify You in my thoughts, my choices, and my daily actions. Remove futile thinking from my mind and replace it with Your wisdom. Teach me to live in gratitude and surrender, not pride and self-reliance. Draw me closer to You, and let my life reflect that I truly know You.
In Jesusâ name, Amen.
