Scripture: Matthew 14:30â31 (NIV)
âBut when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, âLord, save me!â Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. âYou of little faith,â he said, âwhy did you doubt?ââ
Devotion: Life will put us in moments that shake us. Moments that make our chest tight, our palms sweaty, and our mind race with a thousand âwhat ifs.â
Sometimes fear doesnât show up as a scream ;Â it shows up as a whisper:
âWhat if this goes wrong?â
âWhat if I canât handle this?â
âWhat if God doesnât come through for me?â
Fear is a powerful emotion, and if weâre honest, we all face things that feel scary sometimes.
Think about the fear of sitting in a doctorâs office waiting for test resultsâŚ
Think about the fear of sitting in a courtroom waiting for the judge to speakâŚ
Think about the fear of stepping intotrue obedience; knowing God is telling you to move, but everything in you is tremblingâŚ
Fear can paralyze you.
Fear can silence you.
Fear can make you forget everything God already brought you through.
But hereâs the truth: Fear cancels out faith when we let it make us doubt God.
In todayâs scripture, Peter was walking on the water ;actually doing the impossible ; until he allowed fear to take over. The Bible says, âBut when he saw the wind, he was afraidâŚâ
He didnât sink because the water was too strong.
He didnât sink because Jesus wasnât close.
He sank because he stopped looking at Jesus and started looking at the storm.
Thatâs exactly what fear does.
Fear shifts your focus.
Fear magnifies the problem and minimizes your God.
Fear blinds you to what faith had you walking on just moments before.
Jesus didnât let Peter drown ; He immediately reached out His hand. That shows us that even when fear tries to swallow us, Jesus is still right there ready to pull us back up. But He also asked Peter a question that we all need to consider:
âWhy did you doubt?â
Most of the time, fear doesnât show up because God is weak ; but because we stop believing He is strong.
Let today be a reminder that fear and faith cannot live in the same space.
You must choose which one will guide you.
When fear says, âLook at the storm,â
Faith says, âLook at Jesus.â
When fear says, âYouâre sinking,â
Faith says, âYouâre covered.â
When fear says, âThis is too much,â
Faith says, âGod is with me.â
You may not control the wind, but you can control your focus.
Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus, help me choose faith over fear.
When storms rise, help me keep my eyes on You and not on what is shaking around me. Strengthen my heart, settle my mind, and remind me of every miracle, every blessing, and every moment You have pulled me through. I rebuke fear, doubt, and anxiety, and I receive Your peace, confidence, and courage. Lord, be my anchor when life gets overwhelming. I trust You completely. Amen.
