Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:5 (ESV)
āHaving the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.ā
Devotion: Church is a great place to connect with like-minded people and fellowship. You can develop valuable relationships that will help you grow spiritually. And when we grow spiritually, we also grow in the natural.
We already talked about how the church really is a spiritual hospital, and we are glad about it.
But hereās the truthā¦
Without the power of God, church can easily become a social club.
A social club promotes community by planning events, often has fees, gathers people based on shared interests, networks, and brings people together for enjoyment. Membership matters. If you are following closely, you can see how similar that can look to church.
Now hear this clearly; community is a good thing. God does not want His people wandering alone. Churches plan events, bring people together, and build connections; and thatās not wrong.
But when community replaces power, we have a problem.
Because a church without the power of God cannot heal, deliver, transform, or restore anyone.
Some churches can fall into this āsocial clubā category without even realizing it. You may see strong fellowship, regular events, and active groups, but behind the scenes there are cliques, favoritism, surface-level relationships, and very little real transformation.
Let me give you a clear example.
Someone comes into church broken; dealing with depression, sin, or a crisis in their life. Instead of being led to true healing through prayer, truth, and the power of God, they are simply welcomed into conversations, invited to events, and told āyouāll be okay.ā Weeks go by⦠and nothing changes.
They are connected⦠but not healed.
They are included⦠but not transformed.
That is what happens when church operates like a social club instead of a hospital.
The Bible warns us about this in todayās scripture:
having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
Everything looks right.
Everything feels right.
But the power of God is missing.
And the scripture doesnāt just point it out; it says avoid it.
Because a place that looks like God but does not operate in His power can leave people stuck, unchanged, and spiritually sick.
A social club can be enjoyable⦠but it cannot heal your soul.
Only the power of God can do that.
So the question is not just about the churchā¦
Itās about us too.
Are we just looking the part⦠or are we walking in His power?
Are we helping people feel comfortable⦠or helping them be transformed?
Letās choose to be a part of what God intended; a true spiritual hospital where lives are changed, hearts are healed, and people encounter His power for real.
God bless you.
Prayer: Father, help us not to settle for the appearance of godliness without Your power. Let our churches be places of true healing, transformation, and restoration. Fill us with Your Spirit so we can help others experience real change. Remove anything in us that prioritizes comfort over truth. Let Your power be evident in our lives and in Your house.
In Jesusā name, Amen.
