Scripture: 1 Kings 18:37ā39 (NKJV)
āHear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again. Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice⦠Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, āThe Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!āā
Devotion: Did you know that there are thousands of different gods that people around the world worship and pray to?
Throughout history, people have created gods for almost everything: gods of money, fertility, war, nature, power, success, and even self. Some worship statues. Some worship ideas. Some worship fame, status, or wealth without even realizing it.
Humanity has always searched for something greater to trust in.
But in 1 Kings 18, we see a powerful moment that answers a very important question: Who is the true God?
The prophet Elijah stood on Mount Carmel surrounded by people who were divided in their loyalty. Many had turned away from the Lord and began worshiping Baal, a false god that promised power and provision but could do absolutely nothing.
Elijah challenged the people and the prophets of Baal. Two altars were built. Two sacrifices were prepared. But there was one condition; no one was allowed to light the fire. The true God would have to answer by fire.
The prophets of Baal prayed, shouted, and cried out all day. They danced and called on their god, but nothing happened. No fire. No answer. No response.
Then Elijah stepped forward and prayed a simple but powerful prayer. He asked God to reveal Himself so the people would know that He alone is the Lord.
And the Bible says the fire of the Lord fell from heaven.
It didnāt just light the sacrifice. It consumed everything; the offering, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water in the trench around the altar.
When the people saw it, they fell to the ground and declared, āThe Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!ā
This moment reminds us of something very important: God does not compete; He reigns supreme.
People may place their trust in many different things, but when the true God reveals His power, there is no comparison.
Even today, people still build altars to things that cannot answer them: success, relationships, money, influence, or personal ambition. But those things cannot save, sustain, or truly satisfy.
Only God can.
He is not one option among many.
He is the Creator above all.
The One who answers.
The One who reveals Himself.
The One who reigns supreme.
And just like in Elijahās day, God is still revealing Himself today to hearts that are willing to turn back to Him.
Prayer: Father, You alone are God. Forgive me for the times I have allowed other things to compete for my trust, attention, and devotion. Help me to place my faith fully in You and not in things that cannot answer me. Reveal Your power in my life so that others may see that You are the true and living God. I surrender my heart to You and acknowledge that You reign supreme.
In Jesusā name, Amen.
