Scripture: Romans 8:28 (NLT)
âAnd we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.â
Devotion: How many times have you heard someone say, âDonât worry, all things work together for the goodâ?
Itâs one of the most quoted scriptures during hard seasons. People say it at funerals, during breakups, when jobs fall through, when life feels heavy. But letâs slow down and look at this deeper.
It does not say that all things work together for the good for everyone.
If that were true, everyoneâs outcome would reflect Godâs goodness ; regardless of how they live. But thatâs not what the verse says. It says for those who love God.
Pause.
Love is not just a feeling. Love is not a social media caption. Love is not saying âI love the Lordâ on Sunday and living disconnected from Him Monday through Saturday. Love is an action word. It shows up in obedience. In communion. In sacrifice. In praise and worship. In choosing Godâs way when your flesh wants your own.
For example, someone may say they love God, but consistently ignore His instructions, refuse correction, and live however they please. Then when things fall apart, they quote this scripture expecting automatic protection. Thatâs not how covenant works. Love for God produces alignment with God.
The verse continues: âand are called according to His purpose.â
This part is big.
Being called according to His purpose means your life is surrendered to what He wants, not just what you want. It means your decisions are filtered through His will. It means sometimes you say no to things that feel good because they donât align with His assignment for you.
Think about someone called to ministry. That calling may require them to forgive publicly, to serve when theyâre tired, to endure misunderstanding, to stay faithful when growth feels slow. Thatâs purpose. It comes with weight. It comes with responsibility.
It also reminds me of the scriptures that tell us to take up our cross and follow Him. To reign with Him is also to suffer with Him. Following Christ has never been about convenience. It involves pruning, stretching, and refining.
This is why the phrase âall things work togetherâ cannot be used loosely.
People use it casually, almost like a universal guarantee, without acknowledging the criteria in the rest of the verse. This promise is for those who love God and are aligned with His purpose. For those who are walking with Him, not just mentioning Him.
When you love God and live surrendered to His purpose, even your pain becomes productive. Even your setbacks become setup. Even your suffering becomes shaping. It may not feel good in the moment, but God works it into something that ultimately benefits your spiritual growth and fulfills His plan.
It will work out, not because the situation was easy, but because your heart was aligned.
Thatâs the difference.
Prayer: Father, teach me what it truly means to love You. Not just with my words, but with my obedience, my worship, and my daily choices. Align my life with Your purpose and help me carry my cross faithfully. When things are difficult, remind me that Your promise is for those who walk with You in sincerity. I want to be counted among those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Work everything in my life for Your glory and my growth.
In Jesusâ name, Amen.
