Scripture: Joshua 24:15 (NIV)
āBut if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve⦠But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.ā
Devotion: Every single day we are faced with choices. Some decisions are not that serious, but others are of high importance and must be chosen wisely. We have to make the RIGHT decisions when it comes to things that are beneficial for our lives.
Things like choosing to eat healthy in order to avoid health issues. When I worked in the medical field, I met people who were knowingly eating things that would kill them. They were having health scares and hospital stays from eating the very things the doctor told them not to eat. I would try to encourage (witness to) them to CHOOSE LIFE. Some would think about it and improve. Others would laugh and say, āI know itās bad for me, but I donāt care.ā Later, I would hear about their passing.
It was their choice.
Todayās scripture talks about the biggest decision of our lives: Who are we going to serve? This decision is of high importance because who we serve determines a lot of things in our lives. It determines the kind of person you are and the kinds of things you do. Your whole life is being steered by āwhoeverā you are serving.
Serving is not always a picture of a waiter meeting every request. It is also not just volunteering in church. No, you are serving something or someone right now and may not even realize it.
Serving consists of:
⢠Your belief system
⢠The attitude and character you take on
⢠What you commit to believe and what you reject
You can serve:
⢠Yourself
⢠Money
⢠Fame or popularity
⢠Your appetite
⢠Your fleshly desires
⢠People you want to be accepted by
Whatever you serve determines your daily focus, your actions, and eventually your outcomes.
Just like in Joshua 24:15, we have so many things competing with the true and living God. So many choices. So many consequences. But it is still our choice.
In the middle of all the false gods people were choosing, Joshua made a bold declaration: āYāall can do whatever you want, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.ā
Think about that.
Who are you serving right now?
Who is steering your life?
Who is shaping your decisions?
Choose this day whom you will serve.
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to anything I may be serving that is not You. Give me the courage to choose You daily. Help me align my beliefs, my actions, and my household with Your will. I declare that I will serve You with my whole heart.
In Jesusā name, Amen.
