Scripture:â¨Ephesians 4:18â19 (NIV)â¨âThey are darkened in their understanding⌠having lost all sensitivityâŚâ
Devotion: Have you ever noticed how something that once bothered you doesnât bother you anymore? Things you used to care deeply about: peopleâs feelings, doing the right thing, even your own well-being, slowly stop mattering. You donât feel convicted like you used to. You donât feel much of anything at all. That numbness didnât happen overnight. It crept in little by little, and before you knew it, your heart just wasnât as soft as it once was.
Maybe itâs not you feeling this way, but you find yourself wondering how some people can be so careless or unbothered. We see so many senseless things happening in our world that it makes you question whether some people even have a heart. As people, we all go through life and its challenges, and everyone responds to those experiences differently.
Some people choose to stay hopeful, learn from hardship, and lean into their faith. Others give up, stop caring, lose hope, and allow sin to take over. Sin sneaks in quietly. It often starts as a comfort or coping mechanism before it grows into something much more destructive.
Sin doesnât always shock you; sometimes it numbs you. What once bothered you stops bothering you. What once convicted you no longer moves you. Sin makes the heart callous.
It dulls compassion. It causes us to stop caring about ourselves, others, and even God. Things we once prayed about become things we tolerate. A callous heart is dangerous because it resists correction and ignores warning signs.
Ask God to soften your heart again before numbness turns into destruction.
Prayer: Lord, soften my heart where it has grown hard. Restore my sensitivity to Your voice and Your conviction. Remove anything that has caused me to stop caring or stop feeling. I want a heart that responds to You with humility and obedience.â¨In Jesusâ name, Amen.
