Scripture: Psalm 34:14 (NLT)
âTurn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.â
Devotion: Have you ever heard the saying, âThe juice ainât worth the squeezeâ? Many of the things we sacrifice our peace for truly are not worth it.
Todayâs scripture says, âTurn away from evil and do good.â What does that have to do with peace, you may wonder? Everything. The trouble, fear, guilt, and stress that come from doing wrong will rob you of your peace. Looking over your shoulder, fearing consequences, worrying about backlash, or living in regret is the complete opposite of peace.
So what is peace? For some, itâs a quiet ride home after a long day. For others, itâs sitting by the ocean, listening to waves crash. It may be early mornings before the house wakes up, a calm prayer moment, worship music playing softly, or being able to lay your head down at night with a clear conscience.
The formal definition of peace is freedom from disturbance; calmness; tranquility.
In a world full of constant arguing, fighting, chaos, and stress, peace is PRICELESS.
Todayâs scripture doesnât just mention peace; it tells us to PURSUE it and MAINTAIN it. That means peace is something we must actively seek and intentionally protect. Peace does not simply fall into our laps and remain untouched. Every single day, opportunities arise that can steal it.
Everything the Bible teaches us to do in order to have peace; doing the opposite will cost us peace.
Philippians 4:6â7 teaches us not to worry, but to pray. When we choose worry over prayer, anxiety replaces peace.
John 14:27 reminds us that Godâs peace is not like the worldâs peace. When we rely on people, situations, or control instead of God, our peace becomes unstable.
Isaiah 26:3 tells us that God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him. When our minds stay on fear, frustration, offense, or negativity, peace slips away.
Not obeying Godâs Word concerning peace is how we forfeit it.
Find your peace, and protect it.
Do not go places or stay connected to people where confusion, chaos, and drama are common. If you already know trouble is waiting for you in certain environments, relationships, or conversations; avoid them.
Be intentional about your thoughts. Do not allow your mind to constantly replay what frustrates you, hurts you, or angers you, while neglecting to keep your mind stayed on God. This scripture truly works. When we focus on God and good things, we become calmer, more grounded, happier, and more productive.
I donât care how good someone looks or how good they make you feel sometimes: if they are toxic, argumentative, and constantly disturbing your peace, it is not worth it.
Getting the last word in is not worth your peace.
Taking the bait to argue is not worth your peace.
Stressing over things you cannot control and only God can fix is not worth your peace.
So take all of this in today. Find your peace by obeying Godâs Word; and protect it.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for being the source of true peace. Help me to recognize anything that threatens my peace and give me the wisdom to walk away from it. Teach me to obey Your Word, guard my thoughts, and trust You with what I cannot control. I choose peace today, and I ask You to help me maintain it daily.
In Jesusâ name, Amen.
