Scripture:Â Acts 8:1-4 (ESV)
“And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word.”
Devotion:Â Have you ever made a decision that changed the entire direction of your life?
Some decisions are life or death.
Had some of you not stopped hanging around certain friends, you might not be here today.
Had some people not left abusive relationships, they may have lost their lives.
If some of us do not make the decision to stop eating excessive sugar, smoking, or engaging in unhealthy habits, it can lead to serious medical conditions and even death.
Whew!
Some decisions carry weight.
The choice you make today can determine where you end up tomorrow.
That is exactly what we see in today’s scripture.
The church in Jerusalem was facing severe persecution.
Saul was going from house to house, dragging believers away and putting them in prison.
Stephen had already been killed.
The threat was real.
If these Christians stayed where they were, their lives were in danger.
Now let’s be real.
I’m sure this was not an easy decision.
Jerusalem was home.
Many of them had lived there their entire lives.
Their families were there.
Their friends were there.
Their routines were there.
Everything familiar was there.
But had they refused to move, they could have been imprisoned or killed.
Whew!
Their next move mattered.
And so does yours.
Your next move will help determine the trajectory of your life.
That is why decisions should never be made carelessly.
As believers, we should make decisions through prayer and supplication.
First, prayer.
You must communicate with God.
He knows all things.
He is the Author of your faith journey.
He sees what you cannot see.
He knows what is ahead before you ever arrive there.
He will lead you the right way every time, but there must be communication between you and Him.
Then comes supplication.
Supplication means to humbly and earnestly ask for something.
And what are you asking for?
Direction.
“Lord, what do I do?”
“Should I take this job?”
“Should I move out of town?”
“Should I end this relationship?”
“Should I stay where I am or leave?”
“Is this Your will for my life?”
Then after you ask, you must have faith that God hears you and will give you the direction and answers you need.
Too many times we find ourselves making quick, rash, emotional decisions.
We try to fix things ourselves.
We make choices based on feelings.
We make choices based on fear.
We make choices based on peer pressure.
We make choices based on what looks good at the moment.
But as believers, we cannot afford to make flesh-based decisions.
Wrong choices can cost you dearly.
Not just your physical life, but your spiritual life as well.
Whew!
The believers in Acts 8 made a difficult decision.
They moved.
And because they obeyed, God preserved their lives and expanded the Gospel.
What looked like a disruption became divine direction.
Glory to God!
So before you make your next major move, stop and pray.
Seek God’s direction.
Ask Him what He wants you to do.
Because your life may depend on your next move.
God bless you!
Prayer:Â Father God, thank You for caring about every detail of my life. Lord, help me not to make decisions based on fear, emotions, pressure, or what seems right in my own eyes. Teach me to seek You first through prayer and supplication. Give me wisdom, discernment, and direction for every decision I face. Help me trust Your voice above every other voice. Lord, close doors that are not Your will and open the ones You have prepared for me. Protect me from making costly mistakes and guide my steps according to Your perfect plan. I surrender my choices, my future, and my next move to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🕊️
