Scripture: Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
âTrain up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.â
Devotion: Parenting can be full of joys and precious moments, but itâs also not for the faint-hearted.
There is a mysterious shift that happens from a childâs first words, to their teenage years, and into young adulthood.
One minute theyâre sitting in your lap at church, repeating scriptures after youâŚ
and the next, theyâre saying, âI donât want to go to church.â
They can go from needing you for everythingâŚ
to thinking they donât need you, or God, at all.
So many things can happen in their lives that we no longer have control over.
When they are young, we can guide, correct, and set boundaries. But when they reach the age where they start making their own decisions, thatâs when many parents begin to feel fear, heartbreak, and even helplessness.
And this is where we have to learn toâŚ
Trust the training.
Ask yourself:
How did I raise them?
Did I teach them right from wrong?
Did I show them God; not just tell them about Him?
Did I give them the tools they need to live for Him?
Because todayâs scripture is not just a suggestion; itâs a principle.
âTrain up a child in the way he should goâŚâ
This means intentional teaching.
Intentional correction.
Intentional example.
ââŚand when he is old, he will not depart from it.â
Notice it does not say they wonât wander.
It does not say they wonât test things.
It does not say they wonât make mistakes.
But it does mean thisâŚ
What you put in them will stay in them.
Even if they driftâŚ
Even if they rebelâŚ
Even if they try to go their own wayâŚ
That Word, that training, that foundation will follow them.
There will come a moment where what you taught them will speak louder than the world.
So donât panic.
Donât give up.
Donât lose hope.
God sees your prayers.
He sees your tears.
And most importantly; He remembers your obedience in training them.
Your job was to plant.
Godâs job is to water and bring the increase.
Trust that what you taught them will come back to them at the right time.
They are not lost.
They are covered.
God bless you.
Prayer: Father, help me to trust the training I have given my children. When fear tries to come in, remind me that Your Word does not return void. Strengthen my heart and help me not to give up on them. Cover my children, guide them, and bring them back to You. Let every seed I planted grow in Your perfect timing.
In Jesusâ name, Amen.
