Scripture: Genesis 3:12 (NIV)
âThe man said, âThe woman you put here with me; she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.ââ
Devotion: Have you ever known someone who never admits when theyâre wrong? No matter what they do or how much damage they cause, itâs always somebody elseâs fault. They might say something like, âIf John hadnât made me mad, I wouldnât have crashed out and broke the door.â Instead of owning their actions, they blame the person who âtriggeredâ them. That mindset feels justified in the moment, but itâs actually one of the first signs of sin at work.
One of the first effects of sin is blame. When Adam sinned, he didnât take responsibility; he blamed Eve, and indirectly blamed God. Sin makes us point fingers instead of looking in the mirror.
Instead of saying, âI was wrong,â sin causes us to say, âIf they hadnâtâŚâ or âThis wouldnât have happened ifâŚâ Blame keeps us stuck because healing begins with ownership. As long as we blame everyone else, we delay repentance and growth.
Freedom begins when we stop playing the blame game and take responsibility before God. Own it, confess it, and let God restore you.
Prayer: Father, show me where I have been blaming others instead of taking responsibility for my actions. Give me the humility to own my mistakes, repent sincerely, and turn back to You. Heal my heart and help me grow from truth, not excuses.
In Jesusâ name, Amen.
