Scripture: 1 John 2:16 (KJV)

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Devotion: Have you ever been talking to someone and somehow they manage to slide their job title, degrees, accomplishments, or status into almost every conversation?

“Well, when I was the director…”

“I have three degrees…”

“People always come to me because I’m the expert…”

Whew!

You leave the conversation wondering,

“Why did I need to know all of that?”

Sometimes people aren’t simply sharing information…

They’re trying to establish superiority.

They want everyone around them to know how important they are.

This brings us to the third and final root cause of sin:

The pride of life.

My, my, my!

When we think about sin, we usually think of things like murder, adultery, fornication, stealing, or lying.

But today we’re talking about sins that often hide behind success, intelligence, popularity, and achievements.

When the Apostle John wrote these words, believers were facing tremendous pressure.

False teachers were convincing Christians that what they did with their bodies didn’t affect their relationship with God. They were also being tempted to adopt the prideful values of the pagan Roman culture around them.

Sound familiar?

We still face those same pressures today.

Let’s talk about what the pride of life looks like.

Status and Title-Led Pride

This is when your identity becomes your position instead of Christ.

You believe your title makes you more valuable than someone else’s.

For example, someone may look down on the cashier, janitor, or fast-food worker because they are a doctor, attorney, CEO, pastor, or business owner.

Or churches can fall into this trap.

A large church may think it is somehow more important than the small church down the street simply because it has more people, more money, or a larger building.

Whew!

The Bible tells us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think.

Social Validation & Social Clout

We see this every day.

People carefully create an image online that says,

“Look how perfect my life is.”

Every post is designed to gain praise.

Every picture is meant to make someone jealous.

Every achievement is posted to gain validation.

Now don’t misunderstand me.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating God’s blessings.

The problem comes when our goal becomes applause instead of giving God glory.

Arrogant Self-Sufficiency

This one is dangerous.

Some people proudly say,

“I got everything I have by myself.”

Really?

Who gave you the strength to work?

Who gave you the breath in your lungs?

Who opened doors no one else could open?

Who protected you when you didn’t even know danger was near?

Every good thing we have is ultimately because of God’s grace.

Another sign of pride is refusing to ask for help.

Refusing correction.

Never admitting you’re wrong.

Always having to be the smartest person in the room.

Whew!

Humility says,

“I don’t know everything. Please help me.”

Pride says,

“I’ve got this.”

Flashy Materialism

There is nothing wrong with nice things.

God blesses His people.

The problem is when possessions become your identity.

Buying luxury items simply to impress people…

Feeling more valuable because of the logo on your clothes…

Measuring your worth by the size of your house or the price of your vehicle…

That’s the pride of life.

The sad part is that people can spend themselves into debt trying to maintain an image they cannot afford.

Their identity becomes what they own instead of whose they are.

Intellectual & Spiritual Elitism

This one can even show up in church.

Someone learns a little more Scripture than everyone else…

Now they make people feel ignorant.

Someone has stricter personal convictions…

Now they judge everyone who doesn’t practice exactly like they do.

Or someone intentionally uses big theological words simply to sound more spiritual than everyone else.

Knowledge should produce humility…

Not superiority.

The more we truly know God…

The more we realize how much we still need Him.

My, my, my!

As we’ve studied these three root causes of sin over the last few days, I hope you see something important.

The lust of the flesh…

The lust of the eyes…

And the pride of life…

John says none of these are from the Father.

God didn’t create us to live this way.

He created us to live with humility, contentment, gratitude, and love.

Today, I want to challenge you to do something that takes courage.

Don’t examine everyone else…

Examine yourself.

Do I crave recognition?

Do I secretly want people to envy me?

Do I struggle to admit when I’m wrong?

Do I find my identity in what I have, what I know, or what I’ve accomplished?

If the answer is yes…

Don’t become discouraged.

Become surrendered.

The same God who reveals our pride is also able to remove it.

Remember…

The goal isn’t to become impressive.

The goal is to become more like Christ.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for showing me the truth through Your Word. Search my heart and reveal any pride that is keeping me from becoming more like You. Forgive me for the times I have sought recognition instead of giving You the glory. Help me never find my identity in my title, possessions, accomplishments, knowledge, or the opinions of others. Teach me to walk in humility, gratitude, and complete dependence upon You. Give me the courage to receive correction, admit when I am wrong, and celebrate others without comparison or jealousy. Lord, shape my heart to reflect the character of Jesus. May my life always point people to You and never to myself. Thank You for loving me enough to change me. I want to be who You created me to be.
