Scripture:Â 2 Corinthians 7:10
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”
Devotion:Â Have you ever known or seen a person do wrong and not feel bad about it?
Have you ever done something wrong and honestly were not sorry about it?
If the answer is yes… there is a lack of conviction.
Conviction is being Godly sorry and sorrowful over your sins, and most importantly; it leads you to repent.
Conviction is a blessing.
Whew!
A lot of people think conviction is punishment, but conviction is actually evidence that God is still dealing with you.
I have a heart of conviction and a conscience, and it is because of the Word of God and the Holy Ghost.
If I error in any way, I have to get it right immediately.
I do not feel right.
I cannot rest.
I cannot comfortably continue on like nothing happened until I repent.
That is conviction.
For example, if someone with conviction lies on someone, the Holy Ghost will deal with them until they apologize and make it right.
But someone without conviction will lie, gossip, hurt people, and sleep peacefully at night like nothing ever happened.
Whew!
That is dangerous.
Another example:
A person with conviction may fall into sin, but they cry, repent, and ask God to help them change.
A person without conviction keeps doing the same sinful thing over and over while saying:
“This is just who I am.”
“God knows my heart.”
“Ain’t nobody perfect.”
That is not repentance.
That is comfort in sin.
Let’s talk about Pilate for a moment.
Pilate knew Jesus was innocent.
He knew Jesus had done nothing worthy of death.
Yet he still allowed Him to be crucified because he cared more about pleasing people and protecting his position than doing what was right.
That is a lack of conviction.
Imagine knowing truth and still going against it.
And honestly, people still do this today.
People know they are wrong but continue anyway.
People know truth but reject it to fit in.
People know God is dealing with them but ignore Him.
Today’s scripture says Godly sorrow leads to repentance and salvation.
But the sorrow of the world leads to death.
The sorrow of the world is when someone is only sorry because they got caught, embarrassed, exposed, or facing consequences.
That is not true repentance.
Godly sorrow says:
“Lord, I offended You, and I truly want to change.”
That kind of sorrow produces transformation.
Conviction keeps your heart soft toward God.
Without conviction, a person can become numb to sin.
And that is a scary place to be.
So today, ask yourself honestly:
Which one do I have?
A Godly sorrowful heart…
Or the sorrow of the world?
God bless you!
Prayer:Â Father God, thank You for conviction and for loving me enough to correct me when I am wrong. Lord, do not let my heart become hard or comfortable in sin. Give me Godly sorrow that leads to true repentance and change. Help me to quickly repent when I error and not ignore Your voice. Cleanse my conscience and let the Holy Ghost continue to guide and convict me. I do not want the sorrow of the world that leads to death; I want a heart that stays tender and surrendered to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
