🕊️ PRAY HERE Devotion 🕊️ Own the Mistake Immediately

Scripture: Genesis 32:24-28 (KJV)

“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day… And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

Devotion: Have you ever heard someone say,

“The first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one.”

There is a lot of truth in that statement.

If a person is addicted to alcohol but keeps saying,

“I don’t have a drinking problem,”

they will never seek help.

If someone keeps hurting people with their words but says,

“That’s just how I am,”

they will never grow.

If a married couple refuses to admit when they are wrong, the same arguments will continue over and over.

Whew!

Nothing changes until honesty begins.

Now let’s look at today’s scripture.

Jacob had a life-changing encounter with God.

As they wrestled through the night, God asked him a simple question:

“What is thy name?”

Now let’s be clear.

God was not asking because He didn’t know.

God already knew Jacob’s name.

He created him!

He asked the question so Jacob would acknowledge who he had been.

My, my, my!

The name Jacob meant supplanter or deceiver.

Jacob had lived much of his life living up to that name.

He deceived his brother.

He deceived his father.

He manipulated situations to benefit himself.

God brought Jacob to a moment of self-reflection.

Not to shame him…

But to change him.

Glory to God!

Sometimes God asks us questions for the same reason.

Not because He needs information…

But because we need revelation.

He already knows what’s in our hearts.

The question is…

Do we?

Whew!

When Jacob answered,

“My name is Jacob,”

he owned it.

He didn’t make excuses.

He didn’t blame his upbringing.

He didn’t blame his brother.

He simply admitted who he had been.

And immediately after Jacob owned the truth…

God changed his identity.

“Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel.”

Glory!!

Do you see that?

Grace met honesty.

Transformation followed humility.

God didn’t leave Jacob where he was.

He changed him.

That should encourage somebody today.

God is not looking for perfect people.

He is looking for honest people.

People willing to say,

“Lord, I have a temper.”

“Lord, I’ve been bitter.”

“Lord, I’ve been prideful.”

“Lord, I’ve been gossiping.”

“Lord, I’ve been making excuses.”

“Lord, I’ve been living in fear.”

Whew!

The moment we stop pretending…

God begins transforming.

Too many people spend their energy defending unhealthy behavior instead of surrendering it.

Imagine how much faster healing would come if we simply owned the mistake immediately.

Before pointing out someone else’s faults…

Pause and ask yourself,

“Lord, what needs to change in me?”

That’s where real growth begins.

Today, don’t run from conviction.

Welcome it.

Because conviction is not condemnation.

It is God’s loving invitation to become who He created you to be.

So let me leave you with this question:

What unhealthy behavior have I been excusing that God has been asking me to own?

The sooner you own it…

The sooner God can help you overcome it.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for loving me enough to correct me instead of leaving me where I am. Search my heart and reveal anything in me that does not please You. Give me the humility to own my mistakes immediately instead of making excuses or blaming others. Help me welcome conviction because I know it leads to growth and freedom. Lord, replace every unhealthy habit, attitude, and behavior with Your character. Thank You for Your grace that forgives me and Your power that changes me. Make me more like Jesus every day. I surrender every area of my life to You.
