If You Don’t Know, You Can’t Praise. I Get It

Scripture: Psalm 63:3–4 (NIV)

“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.”

Devotion: Imagine a great hero walking through town ; someone who rushed into a burning building and saved many lives. The community gathers around him, cheering, celebrating, lifting him up because they KNOW what he did.

But if you knew nothing about his heroic act, your reaction would be totally different.

You might be confused, wondering,“Why are they praising this man?”

You wouldn’t join the celebration, because you have no connection or testimony to his greatness.

You might even feel annoyed… or simply uninterested.

This is exactly why many people do not praise God.

They don’t know Him.

They don’t know what He has done, or how many fires He has pulled them out of.

They are unaware of the countless moments when God protected them, rescued them, provided for them, or kept them from harm.

And on top of that, a lack of faith keeps them from seeing God’s power in their own lives ; so they remain spectators instead of worshipers.

So yes…I get it.

You can’t praise a God you don’t know.

But today’s scripture gives us a beautiful glimpse into why we praise God.

David was not praising God from a place of comfort ; he was going through some of the roughest seasons of his life. Yet he could boldly say:

“Your love is better than life.”

Why?

Because David knew God.

He had history with Him.

He had testimonies stacked upon testimonies of God’s protection, mercy, guidance, and love.

When David said,

“My lips will glorify You… I will praise You as long as I live… I will lift my hands in Your name,”

he spoke from experience.

And honestly, just reading that stirs something in my spirit too. I have my own stories, my own victories, my own moments where God carried me when life seemed overwhelming.

God has been so good to me, I will praise Him forever.

And His love is what’s holding me even now.

If you want to experience this same love… this same protection… this same unshakeable assurance…

then get to know Him.

Give God a real chance.

He will reveal Himself to you in ways that will make praise rise naturally from your heart.

Because once you KNOW Him?

Praise won’t be something you struggle to do ;

It will become something you can’t help but do.

Prayer: Lord, I want to know You more. Help me see Your goodness, Your love, and Your presence in my life. Open my eyes to the ways You have been protecting and guiding me all along. Draw me closer so that my praise flows from a place of understanding and relationship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
