Fasting Draws Us Closer to God

Scripture: Exodus 34:28 (NIV)

“Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.”

Devotion: Fasting is not a new idea, and it is not a modern trend. The first person in the Bible recorded to fast was Moses. He fasted for forty days and forty nights in the presence of God. No food. No water. No distractions. Just God.

During this fast, Moses was not trying to prove anything to anyone. He wasn’t seeking attention. He wasn’t attempting to earn favor. He was simply in the presence of the Lord: listening, receiving, and being transformed. While fasting, Moses received the Ten Commandments, divine instructions directly from God. But something else powerful happened that many people overlook.

When Moses came down from the mountain, his countenance had changed. The Bible tells us that his face was radiant because he had been in God’s presence. That is what happens when you truly spend time with God; it changes you. Fasting draws us close enough to God that His presence begins to reflect on us.

Fasting removes distractions. It quiets the flesh. It humbles the soul. And it sharpens our spiritual sensitivity. When we deny ourselves physically, we position ourselves to receive spiritually. Moses didn’t just leave the mountain with tablets in his hands; he came down transformed.

If you desire clarity, direction, renewal, or a deeper relationship with God, fasting is a powerful way to draw closer to Him. It is not about perfection or performance; it is about proximity. The closer you get to God, the more His presence will shape your life.

Don’t underestimate what can happen when you intentionally set time aside to seek God without distractions. What He did for Moses, He is still willing to do for you.

Prayer: Father God, draw me closer to You. Teach me the power of fasting and seeking You with my whole heart. Remove distractions from my life and help me to desire Your presence more than anything else. Transform me as I spend time with You, and let Your glory be reflected in my life. I want to know You more.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
