Scripture: âDavid was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.â â 1 Samuel 30:6 (NIV)
Devotion: We all need encouragement sometimes. There will be moments when you feel discouraged or, like David, in distress. The Lord encourages us through His Word, and He will also send encouragement through others.
But some people need constant encouragement from others and still remain discouraged. Why? Because they will sit and replay negative thoughts in their minds and have no faith. It is very difficult to stay encouraged if you lack faith.
Having no faith looks like: always having anxiety, panic attacks, anticipating the worst, feeling depressed, sad, and simply freaking out about everything.
Thanks be to God, David had faith in the Lord. Not only did he have faith, but he also knew how to encourage himself.Todayâs scripture tells us that David was greatly distressed because people wanted to kill him. Yet, even in that dark moment, he found strength in God.
Some of us fall apart over the smallest things, but David remained steady even while facing death. The book of Psalms is filled with David encouraging himself and praising God.
In the famous 23rd Psalm, David was encouraging himself by remembering Godâs truth ; that the Lord was his Shepherd and that He was with him.
Because our God is able to do anything but fail us, we should never worry. Like Jesus told His disciples, âO ye of little faith,â their worry came from a lack of faith and spiritual amnesia.
We often forget what God has already done for us. So, if you struggle with being encouraged or donât know how to lift yourself up, let David be your example today. Ask the Lord to strengthen your faith so that when discouragement comes, youâll know how to encourage yourself in the Lord.
Prayer: Father, thank You for being my source of strength and encouragement. Help me to remember Your goodness and the victories Youâve already brought me through. When I feel weak or discouraged, remind me to turn to You and speak Your Word over my life. Teach me how to encourage myself in You, just like David did. I trust You to fill me with peace, hope, and renewed faith.
In Jesusâ name, Amen.
