Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Devotion:
Are you exhausted from life’s heavy burdens and the pressures that life sometimes brings?
Have you tried everything you know to do, but somehow the weight just keeps getting heavier?
Maybe your burden is financial.
The bills keep piling up, and you’re wondering how you’re going to make it another month.
Maybe it’s your health.
You’ve been praying, taking medicine, going to appointments, but you’re simply tired.
Maybe it’s family problems.
Your marriage is struggling…
Your children are making poor decisions…
Or someone you love has broken your heart.
Perhaps it’s not even something people can see.
You smile when people ask how you’re doing…
But inside, you’re overwhelmed, anxious, discouraged, and mentally exhausted.
Whewww!
If that’s you today…
I want to encourage you.
Don’t get weary.
Don’t give up.
I don’t believe you’re reading this devotion by accident.
It was divinely purposed for you to read it today.
Our Heavenly Father always knows when we’re at the end of our rope.
And although He may not come when we think He should…
Many of us can testify…
He’s always right on time!
Hallelujah!! 🙌🏽
That’s a good place to pause and give God some praise!
Now let’s look at today’s scripture.
During Jesus’ day, the Pharisees were placing heavy religious rules and unrealistic expectations on the people.
Instead of helping people come closer to God…
They made serving God feel impossible.
Jesus saw how burdened the people had become, so He extended one of the greatest invitations ever given.
Notice that Jesus didn’t just identify the problem…
He gave them the solution.
Step One: “Come unto Me…”
Whewww!
Everything starts right here.
Before you call everybody else…
Before you panic…
Before you quit…
Come to Jesus.
Notice He didn’t say,
“Figure it out first.”
He didn’t say,
“Get yourself together first.”
He simply said,
“Come.”
And then He made a promise.
”…and I will give you rest.”
Not temporary relief.
Real rest.
Soul rest.
The kind of peace that doesn’t make sense while you’re still in the middle of the storm.
Step Two: “Take My Yoke Upon You.”
Now this may sound strange at first.
Why would Jesus tell us to take on another yoke?
Here’s the picture.
A yoke was a wooden beam placed over two oxen so they could pull together.
The stronger ox carried most of the weight while the younger one learned by walking beside it.
Whewwww!!
Did you catch that?
Jesus isn’t asking you to carry another burden by yourself.
He’s saying,
“Yoke yourself to Me.”
“Walk with Me.”
“Let Me carry what you cannot.”
What a beautiful picture!
Too many of us are trying to carry life by ourselves.
Jesus says,
“Let Me help you.”
That also means letting go of your own way.
Sometimes our biggest burden is trying to control everything ourselves.
Step Three: “Learn of Me.”
Have you ever heard someone say,
“You can’t make me doubt Him because I know too much about Him!”
Whewww!!
That’s not someone who has merely heard about Jesus.
That’s someone who has spent time with Him.
Faith grows through relationship.
The more you learn about Jesus…
The more you trust Him.
The more you trust Him…
The less you worry.
If your faith feels weak today…
Maybe you’re stuck at Step Three.
Spend more time learning Him.
Read His Word.
Pray.
Listen.
Watch how faithful He has been throughout Scripture.
Before long you’ll begin saying,
“If He did it before… He can do it again!”
Now here comes the revelation that blessed me.
Jesus ends by saying,
“For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
Whewwww!! 🙌🏽🔥
Can I give you a revelation?
The heavy burdens you’re carrying did not come from Him.
Read that again.
Jesus Himself said…
His burden is light.
So if what you’re carrying is crushing you…
If it’s robbing you of your peace…
If it’s keeping you in constant fear…
That isn’t the burden Jesus is offering.
Sometimes people put heavy burdens on us…
Just like the Pharisees did.
But if we’re honest…
Sometimes we put heavy burdens on ourselves.
We ignore God’s warnings.
We refuse wise counsel.
We don’t use discernment.
We keep making the same unhealthy choices.
Then when life becomes overwhelming, we ask,
“Why is God putting me through this?”
Whewww!
According to Jesus…
He isn’t.
He said,
“My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
Today, Jesus is offering you an exchange.
Bring Him your anxiety…
He’ll give you peace.
Bring Him your fear…
He’ll give you faith.
Bring Him your guilt…
He’ll give you forgiveness.
Bring Him your weariness…
He’ll give you rest.
Don’t keep carrying what Jesus already invited you to lay down.
Drop the burden.
Make the exchange.
Walk away lighter than you came.
God bless you!
Reflection
Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:
What burden have I been carrying that Jesus has already invited me to give to Him?
Don’t just identify it.
Release it.
His invitation is still open today:
“Come unto Me.”
Prayer
Father God, thank You for loving me enough to invite me to come to You when I am weary and burdened. Today I bring every heavy weight before You: my worries, my fears, my disappointments, my mistakes, and everything that has been stealing my peace. Forgive me for the times I tried to carry life on my own instead of depending on You. Help me to let go of my way and take on Your yoke. Teach me to trust You more by learning Your Word and spending time in Your presence. Thank You that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Today I choose to make the exchange. I lay my burdens at Your feet and receive Your peace, Your rest, and Your strength. Help me to walk by faith and not by fear, knowing that You are carrying me every step of the way.
In Jesus’ name, Amen 🙏🏼🕊️
