🕊️PRAY HERE Devotion🕊️ “An Idle Mind”

Scripture: “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop; idle lips are his mouthpiece.” — Proverbs 16:27 (NLT)

Devotion: When I was a child, my grandmother would tell my siblings and me to “find you something to do.” If you didn’t have anything to do, she would surely give you something! My grandparents took this scripture literally—and as they should have. She would also say, “I don’t want you to get in devilment.” Now, I’m sure that’s not an official word, but I knew exactly what she meant.

They understood something we didn’t yet know: if you are idle or even just bored, the devil will give you something to do. And I don’t have to explain why that’s not good.

An idle (empty) mind can be filled with anything, and now that we have the internet, it’s even easier to get bad ideas or be influenced by negative content.

For example, an idle mind might start scrolling aimlessly through social media, comparing itself to others, and falling into jealousy or depression. An idle mouthmight start gossiping, spreading negativity, or speaking doubt instead of faith.

The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy, and if he gives you something to do, his goal is to accomplish one, or all, of those things through you.

This is why God’s Word instructs us to “meditate on it day and night” (Joshua 1:8). We must occupy our minds with positive, godly things so that our thoughts produce good actions. Who else but the Lord Jesus Christ can lead us to do what’s right and life-giving?

As a parent, the last thing I want is for my children to be idle or bored. Why? Because I know that if they don’t have something positive to focus on, the devil will easily find them something destructive to do.

Our Heavenly Father is the same about us as His children. The world today is filled with sinful and negative influences waiting to occupy an idle mind. The way to stay free from the trap of boredom and empty thoughts is to fill yourself with God’s Word every day. Meditate on it day and night. And most importantly, “always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

If you stay busy doing good and your mind is filled with God’s Word, you’ll be far less likely to lie, steal, gossip, or fall into sin.

So today, be encouraged to always find something positive to do rather than be idle ; so the enemy won’t trick you into destruction.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me to keep my heart and mind focused on You. Help me to use my time wisely and fill my mind with Your truth. Keep me from idleness and guide me to do things that bring You glory. Lord, help me meditate on Your Word day and night so that I will not fall into the traps of the enemy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
