Scripture: Hebrews 1:14 (KJV)

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Devotion :

Have you ever heard somebody say, “God sent an angel to protect me!” or “I know my guardian angel was watching over me!”?

Or maybe you’ve heard someone say that when a loved one dies, they become an angel in heaven.

But have you ever stopped to ask yourself, WHAT DOES THE BIBLE ACTUALLY SAY ABOUT ANGELS?

There are so many things people believe about angels that come from movies, traditions, and things we’ve heard growing up.

Some people picture angels as little babies with wings. Others believe that every person who dies becomes an angel. And some people have become so fascinated with angels that they give them more attention than they give God Himself!

BUT ANGELS HAVE A PURPOSE, AND THAT PURPOSE COMES FROM GOD!

Let’s look at our Scripture for today.

Hebrews 1:14 asks:

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 🙌🏽🔥

DID YOU KNOW THAT GOD HAS ANGELS WHO SERVE HIM AND ARE SENT TO HELP HIS PEOPLE?

Angels are spiritual beings created by God. They are not deceased human beings who earned their wings.

And according to our Scripture, they are MINISTERING SPIRITS!

Now, what does that mean?

The word ministering refers to serving.

In other words, angels are servants of God who carry out His assignments!

THEY DON’T OPERATE INDEPENDENTLY OF GOD. THEY SERVE UNDER HIS AUTHORITY!

And I want you to understand something else.

Hebrews chapter 1 is not teaching us to become fascinated with angels. The writer is showing us how much greater JESUS CHRIST is than the angels!

Angels are servants.

JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD!

Angels minister according to God’s will.

JESUS IS LORD!

And that distinction is important because we should never give angels the honor, worship, or attention that belongs to God.

So what are some of the things God sends angels to do?

1. ANGELS DELIVER MESSAGES FROM GOD.

Throughout Scripture, God used angels to deliver important messages.

In Luke chapter 1, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced that she would give birth to Jesus.

In Matthew chapter 1, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and instructed him concerning Mary and the child she was carrying.

THE ANGELS DIDN’T CREATE THE MESSAGE. THEY DELIVERED WHAT GOD HAD GIVEN THEM!

2. ANGELS CARRY OUT GOD’S ASSIGNMENTS OF PROTECTION AND DELIVERANCE.

Remember Daniel in the lions’ den?

Daniel 6:22 says:

“My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me…”

Hallelujah! 🙌🏽🔥

God sent His angel, and the lions could not harm Daniel!

And in Acts chapter 12, an angel of the Lord appeared to Peter while he was imprisoned. His chains fell off, and the angel led him out!

BUT DON’T MISS WHO WAS BEHIND THE DELIVERANCE!

IT WAS GOD!

The angel was carrying out God’s assignment.

Now, this doesn’t mean that believers will never experience danger, suffering, or death. Even faithful servants of God experienced hardship.

But it does remind us that GOD IS NOT LIMITED TO WHAT WE CAN SEE!

3. ANGELS CAN STRENGTHEN AND MINISTER TO GOD’S SERVANTS.

In Matthew 4:11, after Jesus had been tempted in the wilderness, the Bible says:

“Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.”

And in Luke 22:43, while Jesus was praying in Gethsemane, an angel appeared from heaven and strengthened Him.

My, my, my! 🙏🏽

If angels ministered to Jesus during His earthly ministry, we certainly shouldn’t dismiss what Scripture teaches about their service!

But here’s where I want to clear up some misunderstandings.

ANGELS ARE NOT GOD!

We don’t pray to angels.

We don’t worship angels.

We don’t have to learn their names, try to summon them, or seek secret ways to communicate with them.

WE PRAY TO GOD!

Colossians 2:18 warns against the worship of angels.

And in Revelation 22:8–9, when John fell down to worship an angel, the angel stopped him and told him to worship God!

EVEN THE ANGELS KNOW WHO DESERVES THE GLORY! 🙌🏽

And let me address something else.

WHEN OUR LOVED ONES DIE, THEY DO NOT BECOME ANGELS.

I know people sometimes say, “Heaven gained another angel,” as a way of expressing love and comfort.

But biblically, human beings and angels are not the same.

God created angels as spiritual beings with their own purpose. The Bible does not teach that people turn into angels when they die.

And what about guardian angels?

Matthew 18:10 speaks of angels associated with God’s little ones, and Psalm 91:11 describes God commanding His angels concerning His people.

These passages show us God’s care and the ministry of angels, but Scripture does not clearly explain that every person has one permanently assigned angel.

WE SHOULD NEVER CLAIM TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ANGELS THAN GOD HAS REVEALED IN HIS WORD!

Whewww! That’s important!

Now here’s what I really want you to take away from today’s devotion.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO SEE AN ANGEL TO KNOW THAT GOD IS TAKING CARE OF YOU!

Sometimes we’re so fascinated with the supernatural that we forget to appreciate the One who has all power!

We want to know whether an angel was in the room.

Whether an angel was standing beside the car.

Whether an angel kept something bad from happening.

But here’s the question:

WHY ARE WE SO CONCERNED ABOUT IDENTIFYING THE ANGEL WHEN WE ALREADY KNOW THE GOD WHO SENDS THEM?

OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 🙌🏽🔥

Don’t become more impressed with God’s servants than you are with God Himself!

And remember, angels are not our saviors.

JESUS CHRIST IS OUR SAVIOR!

Angels cannot forgive our sins.

Angels did not die on the cross for us.

Angels cannot give us eternal life.

ONLY JESUS CHRIST SAVES!

Hebrews 1:14 reminds us that angels minister for those who will inherit salvation.

But that salvation comes through Jesus Christ!

So yes, thank God for His angels and the assignments He gives them.

Thank Him for His protection, His provision, and His care.

But make sure your worship, your prayers, your trust, and your praise remain directed toward THE LORD!

ANGELS ARE GOD’S SERVANTS. JESUS IS GOD’S SON. AND ALL THE GLORY BELONGS TO GOD! 🙌🏽💙

✍🏽 Reflect & Respond

Take a moment to think about what you’ve believed or heard about angels.

  1. Have I based my understanding of angels on Scripture, or on traditions and things people have told me?

  2. Have I ever given more attention to angels and supernatural experiences than to Jesus Christ Himself?

  3. Do I recognize that God is the source of my help, regardless of how He chooses to provide it?

Here’s something I want you to remember today:

YOU DON’T NEED TO SEEK AN ENCOUNTER WITH AN ANGEL WHEN YOU CAN HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GOD WHO CREATED THEM!

Spend time getting to know Jesus Christ through His Word.

And let your confidence rest in Him!

🙏🏽 Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love, protection, and the many ways You care for Your children. Thank You for the angels You created to serve You and carry out Your assignments. Lord, forgive me for any misunderstanding I’ve had about them. Help me seek truth through Your Word and never give anyone or anything the worship that belongs to You. Keep my heart focused on Jesus Christ, my Savior and Lord. Thank You for always being worthy of my trust and praise. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen. 🙏🏽💙
