Scripture: James 5:16; Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

James 5:16: James teaches believers to confess their sins to one another and pray for one another so that they may be healed. He emphasizes that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Hebrews 11:6: The writer reminds us that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Those who come to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

(Scriptures summarized from the NIV.)

Devotion:

I remember an old song that says, “I know what prayer can do. Prayer has brought me through.”

And I sing this with a smile! 😊

HALLELUJAH TO OUR LORD!! 🙌🏽🔥

Because when I think about the prayers God has answered in my life, the doors He has opened, the situations He has brought me through, and the times when I didn’t know HOW things were going to work out…

I KNOW WHAT PRAYER CAN DO!

My, my, my! 🙏🏽

And I’m sure somebody reading this devotion today has a testimony too!

You’ve prayed about something that seemed impossible.

You’ve cried out to God when nobody else could help you.

You’ve gone to bed with tears in your eyes and a heavy heart, but somehow God gave you the strength to get up and face another day!

YOU KNOW WHAT PRAYER CAN DO TOO!

Whewww! 🙌🏽

But when I look at the world today, I see such a GREAT need for prayer.

People are struggling.

Families are hurting.

Marriages are in trouble.

Parents are worried about their children.

People are dealing with sickness, financial hardships, depression, grief, and situations that seem completely out of their control.

AND YET, WITH SUCH A GREAT NEED FOR PRAYER, THERE SEEMS TO BE SO LITTLE FAITH IN WHAT PRAYER CAN DO!

My, my, my!

We will talk about our problems all day long!

We’ll call somebody and tell them everything that’s going wrong.

We’ll post about it.

We’ll worry about it.

We’ll lose sleep over it.

We’ll imagine every possible thing that could go wrong!

BUT HOW MUCH TIME HAVE WE SPENT PRAYING ABOUT IT?

OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 😮‍💨🔥

And here’s something else.

Sometimes we DO pray!

But while we’re praying, we’re already expecting the worst!

We’re asking God to make a way, but we’ve already convinced ourselves that the door is going to remain closed.

We’re asking God to heal, but we’re allowing fear to convince us that there’s no hope.

We’re praying for our children, but we’re constantly telling ourselves that they’ll never change.

We’re asking God to help us through a difficult situation, but we’re already planning for defeat!

WE’RE PRAYING FOR ONE THING WHILE EXPECTING SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

Whewww!

WE HAVE TO PRAY AND HAVE FAITH IN GOD THAT HE CAN DO IT!

Now, let’s read today’s Scriptures together.

In James 5:16, the Bible teaches us about the power and effectiveness of prayer.

James encourages believers to confess their sins and pray for one another.

And then he tells us that THE PRAYER OF A RIGHTEOUS PERSON IS POWERFUL AND EFFECTIVE!

MY, MY, MY! 🙌🏽🔥

DID YOU HEAR THAT?

Prayer is not just something we do because we’re religious!

Prayer is not simply a routine before bedtime or a few words we say before eating!

PRAYER IS OUR COMMUNICATION WITH THE LIVING GOD!

The God who created heaven and earth!

The God who opened the Red Sea!

The God who delivered Daniel from the lions’ den!

The God who raised Jesus Christ from the dead!

THAT’S WHO WE’RE TALKING TO WHEN WE PRAY!

HALLELUJAH! 🙌🏽🔥

And if we believe that God is who His Word says He is, then why are we so quick to believe that our problems are too difficult for Him?

YOUR PROBLEM MAY BE TOO BIG FOR YOU, BUT IT IS NOT TOO BIG FOR GOD!

Now, I want us to look at our second Scripture.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us that WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE GOD!

And that those who come to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Whewww!

PRAYER AND FAITH GO TOGETHER!

Because when we pray, we’re coming before God.

And when we come before God, we should believe that He hears us and that He is able to respond according to His will.

WE CANNOT ALLOW OUR FEAR TO BECOME GREATER THAN OUR FAITH IN GOD!

My, my, my!

Let me give you some everyday examples.

You receive a medical report that frightens you.

The doctor explains the diagnosis, the treatment options, and what could happen.

And before you’ve even had time to process everything, your mind starts imagining the worst possible outcome.

Now, I’m not telling you to ignore your doctor or refuse medical treatment.

I’M TELLING YOU NOT TO FORGET GOD WHILE YOU’RE FOLLOWING THE DOCTOR’S INSTRUCTIONS!

Pray!

Ask God for healing, wisdom for the medical team, strength for your body, and peace for your mind.

DON’T LET FEAR HAVE THE FINAL WORD BEFORE YOU’VE EVEN TAKEN YOUR CONCERNS TO GOD!

Or maybe you’re facing financial difficulties.

The bills are due.

Your money is running low.

You’ve applied for jobs, looked for additional income, and tried to figure out how everything is going to get paid.

And now you’re thinking:

“I DON’T KNOW HOW I’M GOING TO MAKE IT!”

Well, maybe you DON’T know!

BUT GOD KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED!

Matthew 6:32 reminds us that our heavenly Father knows we need these things.

So pray for provision!

Pray for wisdom!

Pray for opportunities!

And while you’re praying, continue doing what you can responsibly do.

FAITH DOESN’T MEAN YOU STOP TAKING ACTION! IT MEANS YOU DON’T STOP TRUSTING GOD WHILE YOU’RE TAKING ACTION!

OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 🙌🏽🔥

What about that parent who is worried about their child?

You’ve talked to them.

You’ve corrected them.

You’ve cried over them.

You’ve tried everything you know to help them make better decisions.

And now you’re exhausted!

DON’T STOP PRAYING FOR YOUR CHILDREN!

Ask God to reach their hearts, protect them, give them wisdom, and place the right influences in their lives.

You cannot make every decision for them.

But you can continue bringing your concerns before the Lord!

SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO STOP TRYING TO CONTROL EVERYTHING AND START TRUSTING GOD WITH WHAT WE CANNOT CONTROL!

My, my, my! 🙏🏽

And here’s another one.

Have you ever been so overwhelmed by a situation that you didn’t even know what to pray?

You sat there with tears running down your face.

You couldn’t find the right words.

All you could say was:

“LORD, PLEASE HELP ME!”

And somehow, after spending time with God, you felt a little stronger.

The situation may not have changed yet.

The answer may not have arrived.

BUT SOMETHING CHANGED INSIDE OF YOU!

You found enough peace to keep going.

Enough strength to face another day.

Enough hope to believe that your situation was not beyond God’s care.

THAT’S THE POWER OF PRAYER TOO!

Whewww! 🙌🏽

Sometimes we measure the effectiveness of prayer only by whether we receive the exact outcome we requested.

But prayer is also where God strengthens us, corrects us, comforts us, and helps us surrender our will to His.

PRAYER IS NOT ABOUT CONVINCING GOD TO DO EVERYTHING OUR WAY!

IT’S ABOUT TRUSTING HIM ENOUGH TO BRING EVERYTHING TO HIM!

And let’s be clear.

Having faith does not mean that every prayer will be answered exactly how we want or when we want.

Even Jesus, while praying in Gethsemane, submitted Himself to the Father’s will.

FAITH TRUSTS GOD’S POWER, BUT IT ALSO TRUSTS GOD’S WISDOM!

And that brings me to something else.

STOP LETTING YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES TELL YOU WHAT GOD CAN AND CANNOT DO!

Just because you haven’t seen an answer yet doesn’t mean God hasn’t heard your prayer.

Just because somebody else didn’t receive the outcome they wanted doesn’t mean you should stop seeking God.

And just because you’ve experienced disappointment before doesn’t mean you should approach every new situation expecting defeat!

DON’T LET YESTERDAY’S DISAPPOINTMENT ROB YOU OF TODAY’S FAITH!

OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 😮‍💨🔥

James chapter 5 goes on to remind us of Elijah.

Elijah was a human being just like us, and yet he prayed earnestly, and God answered!

James didn’t use Elijah’s example to convince us that only certain special people can pray effectively.

He was reminding believers of the power of earnest prayer!

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A PASTOR, PREACHER, OR MINISTER TO PRAY!

You can pray in your bedroom.

In your car.

At work.

In the hospital.

While you’re sitting at the kitchen table wondering what to do next.

YOU CAN PRAY ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, RIGHT NOW!

HALLELUJAH! 🙌🏽💙

And don’t forget what James said about praying for one another.

WE NEED TO GET BACK TO PRAYING FOR PEOPLE!

Not just talking about their problems.

Not just discussing what they’re going through.

Not just saying, “That’s so sad.”

PRAY FOR THEM!

When somebody tells you their marriage is struggling, pray!

When somebody tells you they’re sick, pray!

When somebody tells you they’re worried about their children, pray!

When somebody tells you they’re having a hard time making ends meet, pray!

And when possible, be willing to help in practical ways too.

SOMETIMES GOD CAN USE YOU TO BE PART OF THE HELP YOU’VE BEEN PRAYING FOR SOMEBODY TO RECEIVE!

My, my, my! 🙌🏽

And here’s something I want you to remember.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL EVERYTHING GOES WRONG TO START BUILDING YOUR FAITH!

Spend time in God’s Word.

Remember what He’s already brought you through.

Thank Him for the prayers He has answered.

Keep praying even when things are going well!

Because the more you grow in your relationship with God, the more you learn to trust Him through life’s uncertainties.

And when the next difficult situation comes, you can remind yourself:

“I DON’T KNOW HOW THIS IS GOING TO WORK OUT, BUT I KNOW WHO I’M PRAYING TO!”

WHEWWWW! 🙌🏽🔥

I want to encourage somebody today who has almost given up on prayer.

Maybe you’ve been praying for a long time.

Maybe you’re tired.

Maybe you’ve become discouraged because things haven’t changed.

PLEASE DON’T STOP TALKING TO GOD!

Bring Him your fears.

Bring Him your disappointments.

Bring Him your needs.

Bring Him the situations you cannot fix.

And ask Him to strengthen your faith!

WE HAVE TO STOP EXPECTING THE WORST AND START TRUSTING GOD TO WORK THINGS OUT ACCORDING TO HIS WILL!

Because prayer is powerful!

And faith matters!

PRAYER CONNECTS US TO GOD, AND FAITH HELPS US TRUST THE GOD WE’RE PRAYING TO!

I can smile when I remember that old song because I have lived long enough to have testimonies of God’s faithfulness!

I KNOW WHAT PRAYER CAN DO!

AND I KNOW THE GOD WHO HEARS MY PRAYERS!

HALLELUJAH TO OUR LORD!! 🙌🏽🔥💙

✍🏽 Reflect & Respond

Today, I want you to examine your prayer life and your faith in God.

  1. Am I spending more time worrying and expecting the worst than I am praying and trusting God?

  2. When I pray, do I truly believe God is able to help me, or have disappointments caused me to doubt His power?

  3. Am I consistently praying for others, or do I only turn to prayer when I personally need something?

And here’s the question I really want you to sit with:

DO I REALLY BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PRAYER, OR HAVE I ALLOWED MY CIRCUMSTANCES TO WEAKEN MY FAITH?

Today, I want you to do something.

Think about a situation you’ve been worrying about.

Instead of spending another day imagining everything that could go wrong, TAKE IT TO GOD IN PRAYER!

Ask Him for help.

Ask Him for wisdom.

Ask Him to strengthen your faith.

And trust Him enough to surrender the outcome to His will.

DON’T JUST TALK ABOUT THE PROBLEM. PRAY ABOUT IT!

AND DON’T JUST PRAY. BELIEVE IN THE GOD YOU’RE PRAYING TO! 🙌🏽

🙏🏽 Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of prayer and for allowing me to come boldly before Your throne of grace. Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve allowed fear, worry, and doubt to become greater than my faith in You. Help me stop expecting the worst and start trusting You more. Strengthen my prayer life and remind me that nothing is too hard for You. Father, I bring every burden, every concern, and every situation that is beyond my control before You today. Please give me wisdom, peace, and the strength to keep believing even when I cannot see how things will work out. Help me pray faithfully for others and trust Your will in every situation. Thank You for every prayer You’ve answered and every time You’ve brought me through. Lord, I believe in You, and I believe in the power of prayer! In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen. 🙏🏽💙
