🕊️ PRAY HERE Devotion 🕊️ The Devil’s Web of Lies — Lifestyle
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:9–10 (NIV)
Verse 9: Paul warns that those who live in unrighteousness will not inherit God’s kingdom. He specifically addresses sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, and other sexual sins.
Verse 10: He continues by warning about stealing, greed, drunkenness, slander, and swindling, making clear that those who persist in such unrighteousness will not inherit the kingdom of God.
(Scripture passage summarized from the NIV.)
Devotion
Have you ever watched a spider catch its prey in a web?
A spider carefully builds its web to trap insects. And once its prey becomes tangled in those sticky threads, the more it struggles, the harder it can become to escape.
The spider doesn’t build that web to give its prey somewhere comfortable to live!
IT BUILDS THAT WEB TO TRAP IT, KEEP IT THERE, AND EVENTUALLY KILL IT!
But here’s something else about spiderwebs that I want you to think about.
SPIDERWEBS ARE OFTEN HARD TO SEE UNTIL YOU’RE ALREADY CAUGHT IN ONE!
Have you ever walked right into a spiderweb? 😩
You didn’t even see it!
One minute you’re walking along, minding your business, and the next minute you’re trying to get those sticky strands off your face and out of your hair!
YOU DIDN’T SEE THE WEB, BUT THAT DIDN’T MEAN IT WASN’T THERE!
OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 🙌🏽🔥
AND THAT’S EXACTLY HOW DECEPTION WORKS!
The devil doesn’t always make his traps obvious.
If you could clearly see the destruction waiting on the other side, you probably wouldn’t walk into it!
THAT’S WHY HE DISGUISES THE TRAP WITH SOMETHING THAT LOOKS GOOD, FEELS GOOD, OR SOUNDS RIGHT!
And before you know it, you’re caught up in something you never intended to become a lifestyle!
THE DANGER ISN’T ALWAYS IN WHAT YOU CAN SEE. SOMETIMES IT’S IN WHAT YOU’VE BEEN DECEIVED INTO BELIEVING IS HARMLESS!
Now, I want you to think about something.
THE DEVIL HAS A WEB TOO!
And his web is made of LIES!
He uses deception to trap people, keep them bound, and lead them toward destruction.
Jesus tells us in John 8:44 that the devil is a liar and the father of lies!
LYING IS HIS SPECIALTY!
And one of the most dangerous things about his lies is that they don’t always sound like something evil.
Sometimes they sound comforting.
Sometimes they sound reasonable.
And sometimes they sound like exactly what we WANT to hear!
The Bible says in Isaiah 53:5, “with his stripes we are healed.”
But the enemy would love for you to believe that your sickness means God has abandoned you, that there’s no hope, and that you might as well give up!
Now, being sick doesn’t mean you’re believing a lie. Faithful people get sick, and we should seek medical care while trusting God. But we must not allow fear and hopelessness to become louder than our faith in Him.
Or consider relationships.
James 1:17 teaches us that every good and perfect gift comes from above.
But here comes somebody into your life who constantly mistreats you, manipulates you, disrespects you, and turns your world upside down.
Yet you keep saying:
“I KNOW GOD SENT THIS PERSON TO ME!”
Why?
Because you love them!
Because you’re attached!
Because you don’t want to let go!
And perhaps you’ve convinced yourself that staying in that destructive situation is what God wants you to do.
BUT EVERYTHING YOU DESIRE ISN’T NECESSARILY SOMETHING GOD DESIGNED FOR YOU!
My, my, my!
The enemy wants people to believe lies that will keep them trapped.
And today, I want to talk about one of his most dangerous webs.
THE WEB OF A SINFUL LIFESTYLE!
OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 😮💨🔥
Now, before you decide this devotion is for somebody else, I want you to stay right here with me.
BECAUSE TODAY WE’RE GOING TO LET THE WORD OF GOD EXAMINE ALL OF US!
Let’s read today’s Scripture together.
In 1 Corinthians 6:9–10, the apostle Paul gives the Corinthian church a serious warning.
He identifies sinful practices such as sexual immorality, adultery, idolatry, stealing, greed, drunkenness, slander, and swindling.
And then he tells them something that many people today do not want to hear.
THOSE WHO CONTINUE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD!
Whewww! Lord have mercy! 🙏🏽
DID YOU HEAR WHAT PAUL SAID?
He didn’t say those things were acceptable because God loves us.
He didn’t say we could deliberately continue living however we wanted because Jesus died for our sins.
He warned the church about the seriousness of sin!
And look at the beginning of verse 9.
Paul says, “Do not be deceived.”
DO NOT BE DECEIVED!
In other words, DON’T BELIEVE THE LIE!
THE DEVIL DOESN’T NEED YOU TO SEE THE WEB. HE JUST NEEDS YOU TO KEEP BELIEVING THE LIE!
And what is one of the biggest lies the enemy wants people to believe today?
“YOU CAN KEEP LIVING IN SIN AND STILL BE RIGHT WITH GOD BECAUSE JESUS LOVES YOU!”
Now, let’s be clear.
JESUS DOES LOVE YOU!
God’s love is real!
His mercy is real!
His grace is real!
And Jesus Christ died for sinners!
BUT GOD’S LOVE DOES NOT MEAN THAT SIN IS NO LONGER SIN!
And His grace is not permission to deliberately continue in a lifestyle that opposes His Word!
Romans 6:1–2 asks whether we should continue in sin so that grace may increase.
And Paul’s answer is a strong NO!
GOD DIDN’T SAVE US SO WE COULD BECOME COMFORTABLE LIVING IN THE VERY THINGS HE CAME TO DELIVER US FROM!
My, my, my! 🙌🏽
But look at how the devil’s web works.
He doesn’t always tell people to stop believing in God.
Sometimes he wants them to believe in God while continuing to ignore what God says!
He whispers things like:
“EVERYBODY DOES IT!”
“GOD KNOWS YOUR HEART!”
“YOU’RE NOT HURTING ANYBODY!”
“IT’S JUST WHO YOU ARE!”
“YOU CAN CHANGE LATER!”
“JESUS LOVES YOU, SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT!”
And little by little, people become comfortable with things they once felt convicted about.
They stop questioning their behavior.
They stop responding to correction.
They begin making excuses for what Scripture clearly warns against.
AND EVENTUALLY, THEY START DEFENDING THE VERY SIN THAT IS KEEPING THEM BOUND!
Whewww! 😮💨
Let’s bring this into everyday life.
Somebody is living in sexual immorality, but they’ve convinced themselves that because they’re in love, God must approve of the relationship.
Somebody is constantly lying and deceiving others, but they say, “That’s just how I have to survive.”
Somebody is greedy, dishonest in business, or taking advantage of people, but they keep calling their financial gains blessings from God.
Somebody is constantly gossiping, slandering, and destroying people’s reputations, but they don’t see anything wrong with it because the information they’re spreading is true.
Somebody keeps getting drunk and allowing alcohol to control their behavior, but they insist they can stop whenever they want.
DO YOU SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO JUSTIFY A LIFESTYLE WHEN WE DON’T WANT TO CHANGE IT?
And notice something else about Paul’s list.
HE DIDN’T JUST TALK ABOUT SEXUAL SIN!
He also talked about greed!
Drunkenness!
Slander!
Stealing!
And cheating people!
SO BEFORE WE START POINTING FINGERS AT SOMEBODY ELSE’S LIFESTYLE, WE NEED TO EXAMINE OUR OWN! 👀
Because the enemy doesn’t care which sin he uses to keep somebody trapped.
HE JUST WANTS THEM TO REMAIN COMFORTABLE IN IT!
And this is why we have to be careful about allowing our feelings to determine what is right and wrong.
Just because something feels good doesn’t mean it’s good for us.
Just because something has become normal in society doesn’t mean God approves of it.
And just because we have been doing something for years doesn’t mean we should continue doing it.
GOD’S WORD DOES NOT CHANGE TO ACCOMMODATE OUR LIFESTYLE!
OUR LIFESTYLE IS SUPPOSED TO CHANGE TO ALIGN WITH GOD’S WORD!
OOOOOOEW WEEEEE! 🙌🏽🔥
And here’s what makes this so serious.
Romans 6:23 says:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (KJV)
SIN LEADS TO DEATH!
And we’re not just talking about physical death.
Sin separates us from God, and refusing His salvation has eternal consequences.
HEAVEN AND HELL ARE REAL!
And the devil would love for people to become so comfortable in sin that they never repent and surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.
THAT IS WHY THE LIE IS SO DANGEROUS!
Because if he can convince you that you don’t need to change, he can keep you from responding to the truth that could set you free!
But I don’t want to leave you with only the warning.
I WANT YOU TO SEE THE HOPE THAT COMES NEXT! 🙌🏽
In 1 Corinthians 6:11, Paul reminds the believers that some of them USED TO LIVE in the very sins he had just named.
BUT THEY HAD BEEN WASHED!
THEY HAD BEEN SANCTIFIED!
THEY HAD BEEN JUSTIFIED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!
HALLELUJAH! 🙌🏽🔥
THAT MEANS YOUR PAST DOES NOT HAVE TO REMAIN YOUR FUTURE!
You don’t have to stay trapped in sin!
You don’t have to remain the person you used to be!
And you don’t have to believe the lie that you’ve gone too far for God to forgive you!
JESUS CHRIST CAME TO SAVE SINNERS!
And salvation is not something we earn by becoming perfect.
We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
But genuine faith calls us to repentance and a transformed life.
Does that mean believers never struggle or fall short?
No!
But there’s a difference between struggling against sin and deciding that sin is acceptable because you don’t want to surrender it.
DON’T MAKE PEACE WITH WHAT GOD IS CALLING YOU TO REPENT OF!
And please understand, when the enemy tells you that you’re too far gone, that’s another lie!
God is merciful.
He forgives.
He restores.
He changes lives.
BUT WE MUST STOP RUNNING FROM THE TRUTH AND TURN TO JESUS CHRIST!
Maybe today you’ve recognized something in your own life.
Something you’ve been defending.
Something you’ve been making excuses for.
Something you’ve been calling normal even though God’s Word says otherwise.
DON’T IGNORE THAT CONVICTION!
The devil wants you to stay in his web.
BUT JESUS CHRIST OFFERS FREEDOM!
You don’t have to remain tangled in deception.
You don’t have to continue living under the control of sin.
And you certainly don’t have to let the devil convince you that God’s love means you never have to change.
GOD LOVES YOU TOO MUCH TO LEAVE YOU WITHOUT THE TRUTH!
And that truth is calling you to repentance, salvation, and a new life in Jesus Christ.
STOP BELIEVING THE LIE THAT YOU CAN LIVE ANY KIND OF WAY AND STILL EXPECT TO INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD!
THE DEVIL WANTS YOU TRAPPED. JESUS WANTS YOU FREE!
And today, you have an opportunity to respond to the truth.
DON’T STAY IN THE WEB! COME TO JESUS! 🙌🏽🙏🏽💙
✍🏽 Reflect & Respond
Today, I want you to examine your lifestyle honestly in the light of God’s Word.
Is there something in my life that I know God has called me to change, but I’ve been making excuses for it?
Have I allowed my feelings, desires, or society’s acceptance of something to become more important than what Scripture teaches?
Am I using God’s love and grace as an excuse to remain comfortable in sin instead of allowing His truth to transform me?
And here’s the question I really want you to sit with:
AM I LIVING ACCORDING TO GOD’S WORD, OR HAVE I BELIEVED A LIE THAT MAKES MY LIFESTYLE FEEL ACCEPTABLE?
If God is convicting your heart today, don’t ignore Him.
Repent. Turn away from sin. Ask Him for help. Seek the support and accountability you need to begin walking in obedience.
And if you haven’t surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, DON’T KEEP PUTTING IT OFF!
THE TRUTH CAN SET YOU FREE, BUT YOU MUST BE WILLING TO RECEIVE IT!
🙏🏽 Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to reveal the truth. Forgive me for every lie I’ve believed and every sin I’ve justified because I didn’t want to change. Lord, open my eyes to anything in my lifestyle that is not pleasing to You. Help me stop making excuses and start walking in obedience to Your Word. Give me the strength to resist temptation, repent sincerely, and turn away from anything that separates me from You. Jesus, thank You for Your mercy, forgiveness, and the freedom You offer through salvation. I don’t want to remain trapped in sin. I want my life to please You. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen. 🙏🏽💙
