🕊️ PRAY HERE Devotion 🕊️ Fooled by Your Routine-Based Relationship

Scripture: Isaiah 29:13 (KJV)

“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:”

Devotion: Have you ever driven somewhere so many times that you arrived without even thinking about the drive?

Your mind was somewhere else…

You stopped at the red lights…

Made all the right turns…

Yet you weren’t really paying attention.

It had become routine.

Whew!

Sadly, that is how many people’s relationship with God has become.

They go to church every Sunday.

They sing every song.

They know when to stand and when to sit.

They know the church language.

They know the Bible stories.

But they don’t truly know God.

My, my, my!

Their prayers are quick, empty, and routine.

They make major life decisions without sincerely seeking the Lord.

Then they justify those decisions by saying,

“God told me to do it.”

Did He…

Or did you want to do it?

Whew!

Let’s look at today’s scripture.

God said,

“This people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me…”

Notice…

Their mouths were close to God…

But their hearts were not.

They talked about Him.

They sang about Him.

They honored Him with words.

But their hearts had become disconnected.

What a frightening place to be.

God went on to say,

”…their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.”

In other words…

Their relationship with God had become nothing more than religious routine.

They knew what people expected.

They followed traditions.

But they weren’t living in heartfelt obedience to God.

Whew!

We still see this today.

There are believers who sincerely think they have a strong relationship with God because they attend church faithfully.

But they never go to God’s Word looking for ways to improve themselves.

Instead, they only obey the Scriptures they like.

They’ll faithfully obey the Scriptures about tithes and offerings…

But skip the ones that tell husbands to love their wives sacrificially and treat them with understanding so their prayers are not hindered.

They’ll gladly obey,

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”

So they sing loudly every Sunday.

But when they read,

“Love your enemies.”

They skip it.

When they read,

“Forgive one another.”

They ignore it.

When they read,

“Have faith in God.”

They say,

“That doesn’t apply to me.”

Or perhaps they never even stop long enough to let the Word examine them.

Whew!

Some believers know the Bible…

But the Bible doesn’t know them because they refuse to live it.

Knowledge without obedience produces self-righteousness.

That was the problem with the Pharisees.

They knew the Scriptures…

But they rejected the very One the Scriptures pointed to.

My, my, my!

Here’s the scary part.

A person can become so comfortable with routine Christianity that they honestly believe they’re close to God.

They’ve convinced themselves,

“I’m doing just fine.”

Meanwhile…

They have no conviction.

No desire to change.

No hunger to obey the difficult commands.

No willingness to let God correct them.

The enemy has them fooled.

Whew!

If we only obey the parts of God’s Word that are convenient…

We’re not following God.

We’re following ourselves.

A real relationship with God changes us.

It challenges us.

It convicts us.

It stretches us.

It causes us to become more like Christ.

Today, I want to lovingly challenge you.

Don’t ask,

“Do I go to church?”

Ask,

“Is my heart close to God?”

Don’t ask,

“Do I know the Bible?”

Ask,

“Am I living what I know?”

Don’t settle for a routine relationship…

When God is inviting you into a real one.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment today and honestly ask yourself:

Am I growing in my relationship with God… or have I simply gotten good at my Christian routine?

The answer to that question could change your life.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for loving me enough to tell me the truth. Please search my heart and reveal any area where I have replaced a real relationship with You with empty routine. Forgive me for the times I have honored You with my words but failed to obey You with my life. Give me a heart that longs for Your presence, welcomes Your correction, and delights in doing Your will; even when it challenges my flesh. Remove every form of self-righteousness, pride, and spiritual deception from my life. Help me not to simply know Your Word, but to live it every day. Draw me closer to You and create in me a genuine relationship that transforms every part of my life. I don’t want to be fooled by routine. I want to truly know You.
