Scripture: John 14:15 (KJV)
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Devotion: Have you ever had a child who constantly ignored what you asked them to do?
You tell them to clean their room…
They don’t.
You tell them to stay away from certain friends…
They ignore you.
You tell them to be home at a certain time…
They do what they want instead.
Then a few minutes later they come asking,
“Can I have some money?”
“Can you buy me this?”
“Will you do this for me?”
As a parent, you still love your child…
But it hurts to feel ignored.
You begin to wonder,
“Do they really respect me? Do they really value what I say?”
Whew!
Now let’s turn that around.
How many times have we been that child with God?
Oh Lord… we’re sorry.
We ask Him to bless us.
Protect us.
Heal us.
Provide for us.
Open doors for us.
Yet when He tells us to forgive…
We don’t.
When He tells us to stop gossiping…
We keep talking.
When He tells us to let go of that unhealthy relationship…
We hold on tighter.
When He tells us to spend time with Him…
We make time for everything else.
Whew!
Love should be proven, not just spoken.
Let’s look at today’s scripture.
Jesus said,
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Notice He didn’t say,
“If you love Me, just tell Me.”
He didn’t say,
“If you love Me, sing about Me.”
He didn’t even say,
“If you love Me, post scriptures on social media.”
No.
He said,
“Keep My commandments.”
Why?
Because obedience is the evidence of love.
Jesus wasn’t teaching that we earn His love through obedience.
He was teaching that when we truly love Him, obedience becomes our response.
Just like in a healthy relationship, love naturally desires to please the other person.
My, my, my!
Let’s do a little self-reflection.
Do I really love God?
Not according to what I say…
But according to how I live.
If I had to rate my love and obedience to God right now…
What would my score be?
What’s keeping me from obeying Him?
Fear?
Pride?
Convenience?
The opinions of people?
Or have I simply gotten comfortable doing things my own way?
Now here’s a question that really challenged me.
Would I want someone to love me the same way I am currently loving God?
Would I be satisfied with someone who only talked to me when they needed something?
Who ignored my instructions?
Who made excuses instead of changes?
Who said they loved me but rarely showed it?
Whew!
That one will make you think.
The beautiful thing about God is that even when we fall short, His grace gives us another opportunity to get it right.
Today is a great day to stop merely saying,
“Lord, I love You,”
and start proving it through obedience.
Not because we’re trying to earn His love…
But because we’ve already received it.
So today, choose one thing God has been asking you to do…
And do it.
That one act of obedience may be the very thing that changes your life.
God bless you!
Prayer: Father God, thank You for loving me even when I have not always obeyed You. Please forgive me for the times I have ignored Your voice, delayed my obedience, or chosen my own way instead of Yours. I do love You, and I want my life to prove it. Give me a willing heart that delights in keeping Your commandments. Remove anything that is keeping me from fully obeying You. Help me love You not only with my words, but with my actions, my choices, and the way I live every day. Thank You for Your grace, Your patience, and Your unfailing love. From this day forward, help me show You just how much I love You through my obedience.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🏼🕊️
