🕊️ PRAY HERE Devotion 🕊️ Replace the Bad Habit with a Positive Opposite

Scripture: Luke 19:1-10 (KJV)

“And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house…” — Luke 19:8-9

Devotion: Have you ever cleaned out a closet, got rid of a bunch of old clothes, and then noticed it looked empty?

If you never put anything back in it, eventually you’ll start filling that empty space with more clutter.

The same thing happens in our spiritual lives.

Many people work hard at stopping bad habits…

But they never replace them with good ones.

Whew!

Removing something is only half the battle.

What are you putting in its place?

Let’s look at today’s scripture.

Before Zacchaeus met Jesus, he had some unhealthy habits.

He cheated people.

He loved money.

He abused his position as a tax collector.

Then Jesus came into his life.

Notice something interesting.

Jesus never told Zacchaeus how much money to give away.

He didn’t give him a list of rules.

Instead, Zacchaeus’ changed heart produced changed actions.

Glory to God!

He voluntarily replaced greed with generosity.

He didn’t just stop stealing…

He started giving.

He gave half of everything he owned to the poor.

Then he said if he had cheated anyone, he would repay them four times what he had taken.

Whew!

That is what real repentance looks like.

It doesn’t just stop doing wrong…

It starts doing right.

My, my, my!

Sometimes stopping isn’t enough.

If you stop gossiping…

Start encouraging people.

If you stop complaining…

Start thanking God for what you do have.

If you stop wasting hours scrolling on your phone…

Start spending time in God’s Word.

If you stop watching things that feed your flesh…

Start filling your mind with things that strengthen your faith.

If you stop speaking harshly to your family…

Start speaking life, patience, and kindness into your home.

Don’t just remove something.

Replace it.

Because if you don’t replace unhealthy habits with godly ones, the empty space often gets filled with the same things you asked God to remove.

Whew!

The goal isn’t simply to quit bad habits.

The goal is to become more like Jesus.

Every unhealthy habit has a godly opposite.

And every time you choose the godly response, you are strengthening your new life in Christ.

Today, don’t just ask yourself,

“What do I need to stop doing?”

Also ask,

“What does God want me to start doing instead?”

That one question could change your life.

God bless you!

Prayer: Father God, thank You for loving me enough to change me from the inside out. Show me every unhealthy habit that does not please You, and give me the strength to let it go. But Lord, don’t let me stop there. Help me replace every wrong habit with one that honors You. Replace my complaining with gratitude, my anger with patience, my gossip with encouragement, my fear with faith, and my selfishness with generosity. Fill every empty place in my heart with Your Holy Spirit and Your truth. Help me become more like Jesus every day, and let my changed life be a testimony that brings glory to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🏼🕊️
