Scripture Reference: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1 (KJV)
Devotion: Have you ever had someone speak to you harshly and it left you hurt, angry, or frustrated? Or maybe you’ve found yourself speaking rough to others, whether knowingly or unknowingly. The truth is, our words have the power to either bring peace or start a war.
Think about spouses who tear each other down with sharp words. Instead of resolving the problem, it usually makes things worse. Or consider a manager who talks harshly to employees; it breeds resentment instead of productivity. Even spiritual leaders can sometimes forget that gentleness is just as important as truth, and their rough words can wound those who look up to them.
Arguments don’t end because you got your “two cents in” or the last word. In fact, that often adds more fuel to the fire. You might feel good that you got your point across by expressing your anger, but you did not end the war. If you take a moment to think back on disagreements you’ve had recently, what words did you speak? Did they help solve the issue, or did they only escalate it?
This week, pay close attention to your words and your tone. Choose words dipped in honey rather than vinegar. A gentle response can calm tempers, restore peace, and even mend broken relationships.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me of the power of my words. Help me to respond with gentleness, patience, and love, even when I feel provoked. Teach me to pause before I speak and to choose words that bring peace instead of strife. May my words reflect Your character and turn away wrath.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
